Crashing/Stuck in character select
Game keeps getting stuck at character select. I get music, but my character model doesn't load and the menu freezes after 20ish seconds.

- If you cannot see your characters in character select, try: Reseting graphics back to Default from the Options > Repair on DDO launcher. Then Set graphics to DX 9. Use the Detect Optimal Graphics button.

- Try using DX 11, DX 10 or DX 9 if you are having problems with DX 12. Might have to install DX 10, 9 and 11 on a new Windows 10 or 11 OS load.

- For minor graphic problems, Try using Detect Optimal Setting check in Graphics tab of the Options while running the game.

I know this is pretty obvious/basic, but have you tried verifying the files?

So I got to load in and see my characters after it froze when the game opened, but now I can't load in without losing connection to the server.

I did that lol I used to do geek squad appliance/tv tech and fully understand having to ask people that question. So many grannies didn't want to admit they didn't power cycle their modem/router.

Yeah. Done my time in tech support. Amazing what people can overlook.

Next suggestion: Try running it outside of Steam (without the overlay active).

At the risk of upsetting you, it is sounding a lot like a driver or even hardware issue. It's very rare for software to lock up in the way you describe, it can happen with very badly written stuff, but DDO is pretty robust, actually.

Have you made sure that graphics drivers are up to date and properly installed, and obviously, no overclocking your hardware (just because it seemed stable doesn't mean it actually is, rule out that out before anything else)?

Actually, I'm now troubleshooting what's going wrong with the whole setup lol you haven't upset anyone. I really appreciate you helping! Especially on such an old mmo, in comparison to other more popular titles. For whatever reason, downloading directx 11 did it. the computer is just struggling right now. my drives are filling and I have no idea why lol

I had this! I troubleshooting extensively, and then reset/uninstalled everything, re-downloaded, and played in DirectX9. I'm fine now!

I stopped using the steam version and had the game working last night (downloaded directly from the DDO website) and that got me passed the forward iterations bug. Then today I had the problem you described, I selected to run as administrator and I'm in the game.
