Honestly Unleashed doesn't even need a remaster. A competent 60fps port with a proper PC options menu would be plenty just to make the game more accessible.
As someone who never played Unleashed, I'd love to see it be made available on PC.

What about for PlayStation users? The game was only released on the PS3 and is not compatible with either the PS4 or the PS5, meaning the only way PS players can play it is by having a PS3.

And yes, I know PS Plus is a thing, but...
1. PS3 games are streamed from a server and cannot be downloaded, which only causes more problems than it's worth due to requiring a stable connection at all times.
2. You can't even stream games in some countries such as Australia which is where I'm from, so a good majority of people won't be able to access it even if it was available to stream.
3. Is Sonic Unleashed PS3 even on the PS Plus service? I know the 360 version is backwards compatible on the newer XBOX consoles and runs on your own hardware, but the PS3 version isn't.

Switch users would also feel left out as it was never released on a Nintendo system before (the Wii version was a completely different game much like the PS2 version was) and even if it was, the Switch isn't even compatible with GameCube, Wii or Wii U games anyway.

This is why a remaster is unfortunately essential for Unleashed in 2023, not just for PC users, but also for PlayStation and Switch users as well. The only ones that don't need it are XBOX players, which unfortunately does not make up the majority of the fanbase. I, for one, don't own an XBOX console or the 360 version of Unleashed.

My point was never that we should only get a PC port, I was simply talking within the context of one. Even for Playstation I don't think a remaster is necessary to be honest. The game still visually holds up very well.

Additionally, we probably aren't getting a remaster without it also coming to Xbox, which considering the recent backwards compatibility stuff in that regard doesn't seem like it's really all that likely. Just getting everyone up to more equal footing with Xbox is probably the best we can hope for, which isn't really an issue considering how well the game still holds up to begin with.

Which is less than half the game. Even the developers of the project admit that it is no replacement or alternative to the actual game.

You kind of missed the point that I was trying to bring up before, that being the lack of backwards compatibility with PS3 games on the PS4/5 and even the Switch not being compatible with Wii games. While it does sound like a separate issue altogether, and for the most part it is, it does tie into the main point of why a remaster would be necessary.

Maybe we wouldn't be seeing so many remakes or remasters of our older, beloved games if these newer consoles were backwards compatible with the older games we already bought before. There's a reason why not a single PS1 classic was ever remade for the PS2 - the latter was fully compatible with the former.

Backwards compatibility is always nice for saving money, but a lack of it being there is never a reason for why a remaster would be necessary. Old games can still get straight ports to newer hardware if the source code still exists. That does of course depend on the idea that SEGA still has Sonic Unleashed's source code though.

Quality > Quantity.

I'm fine with scrapping out the unecessary long night stages and hub sections to focus on the better parts.

You are rather in the wrong there. Because being faithful to source is also part of Quality. Imagine if, like, Metroid Samus Returns removed most of the Metroids and the Metroid counter.

And more: the night stages are actually good, it is just a slower but action-packed game style, similar to E-102 Gamma in SA1 or Tails/Eggman in SA2, but actually better..

Everyone has their own tastes. I can understand if someone only cares about the day stages, but being able to experience the full game is also a large part of why so many people want a modern port of the game. Also, Generations modding has come a long way, but it's not to the point where it can count as a 100% accurate recreation of Unleashed, even in the day stages. It's simply "good enough" for some people.

Quality > Quantity.
Sonic Origins - 4 classic games that are more expensive than previous collections and are more buggy than the original Mega Drive releases.
Sonic Mega Collection Plus - 20 classic games that can still be bought for dirt cheap (about a quarter of the price of Origins) and plays just like the original Mega Drive releases.

Quality over quantity is a rather weak argument in 2023, especially when there are plenty of other examples I can use against it.
