WHAT IS DESTA: THE MEMORIES BETWEEN?

From the creators of Monument Valley (that's us)!, Desta: The Memories Between is our latest genre-bending title. A heartfelt strategy game where you fall into a mysterious dreamworld. Grab your emotionally-charged ball, track your opponent's strategy and work tactically with your ultimate dream-team to throw the best shot and get to the heart of the conversation.

Desta: The Memories Between combines ustwo games’ approach to character storytelling with distinctive team-based tactics and physics gameplay, featuring strategic chess-like play with perfect physics precision!

WHAT IS ‘DREAM TEAM EDITION’?

Dream Team Edition is the digital collector’s edition of our cosy tactics game - compiling all major content updates together, including all characters, new game modes (including Challenge Mode and Nightmare Mode - which both unlock after the completion of the main story), as well a complete game soundtrack composed by acclaimed UK Artist Mansur Brown and a beautiful Digital Art Book! This is the ultimate bundle for fans of ustwo games!

WHAT IS THE GAME STRUCTURE?

When first playing Desta: The Memories Between, you will have access to the Main Story, which can be played in a linear fashion to completion from the very beginning. As Desta is a roguelike, there is an expectation that you may fail at times, and will have to start again - carrying over all your upgraded abilities.

As you progress through the game, there are options on Rest Floors with Crystal Desta where you may be able to ‘skip ahead’ to the latest chapter. This is the best solution for those invested in the story. For those invested in the skill and tactical challenge, then playing the game in the more traditional roguelike route may be the best option. As developers interested in making approachable games, we wanted to provide an option for every type of tactics and roguelike player.

At ustwo games, we are huge believers in approachability and accessibility in games, so we have worked hard to create an extensive amount of accessibility gaming options for all types of players too.

WHAT ARE CHALLENGE MODE + NIGHTMARE MODE (POST-GAME CONTENT)?

Challenge Mode provides brand new standalone scenarios designed to test the most experienced of players in unique ways. Complete these challenges to unlock bonus team mates for Desta's main dream, as well as aid you as you dive deeper into Nightmare Mode.

Nightmare Mode provides the most tactical challenge yet - providing encounters to face and modified rules. Any HP lost in a previous memory carries over to the next encounter, so you will need to be careful to see if you can reach the end of the Nightmare.

WITH EVERY PURCHASE OF DESTA, SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE IN NEED

Following our campaign with Alba: A Wildlife Adventure and seeing how much you loved us planting over 1 million trees for every download of the game, we knew we wanted to do something similar with Desta. We have partnered up with nationwide charity UK Youth to donate 3% of profits to youth centres and youth work to keep inspiring young people to live up to their potential with creative, safe spaces during this tough cost-of-living crisis. Hey everyone!

Today we are really excited to share something that is very important to all of us at ustwo games, and everyone working on making Desta the best game it can be - the importance of supporting the youth of today; our generation of tomorrow.

We are really proud to announce that by buying Desta: The Memories Between (Dream Team Edition) on Steam, you will be directly contributing directly to a great cause, and our friends UK Youth.

We’re donating 3% of profits from all sales of Desta: The Memories Between: Dream Team Edition to youth initiatives via a special partnership with the amazing people at UK Youth.

Our aim is simple: to raise the profile of youth workers and youth services, and highlight the importance and hard work these incredible people and places offer. In our story, Desta's dad was a youth worker, and his presence ripples throughout the very-real aspects of our story.

Our goal is to raise £100,000 in total, comprising up to £81,000 in grants for up to three different youth centres, including one in North England, mirroring the types of area's Desta is from.

In addition, £27,000 will be made available as unrestricted funding to UK Youth in support of its ongoing cost of living crisis activity.

Joel's Dream Team is Miss K. and Nila, an iconic team. Joel thinks everyone should play with them because: Miss K’s Encouraging Throw ability gives +1 AP, which combos well with many characters. When paired with Nila and her Cause and Effect ability, which can cause damage to all characters who are holding balls, the extra AP allows Nila to take up the perfect position before being passed to. Then she has the AP to activate her ability and throw, dealing a huge hit that ricochets across the opponents’ team.

In our last blog we talked a little about the awesome new game modes you’ll be able to experience, but this week we wanted to take a step back from gameplay and give you a sneak peek of something quite special: the epic digital art book included as part of Dream Team Edition. Tactical Team-Play - Made Approachable for All

Hey Dream Team,

We’re back again and diving deeper into the awesome new features we’re bringing to Desta: The Memories Between for Dream Team Edition for Steam.

As you may know, in the main game and story of Desta: The Memories Between, Desta will fall to sleep into a mysterious - and anxiety-filled - dream world, finding old friends and discovering a surreal turn-based ball game. To escape, Desta needs to confront these familiar faces from their past and work through their problems and find their friends once more.

However, as this is a roguelike, sometimes - just sometimes - the conversation may get too much and one last ball hit might be a shock to the system and wake Desta up, taking you back to the beginning of the dream again.

When making this game, we knew we had a universal story that appealed to everyone, and we knew we loved both roguelike and tactics games. So our aim from the very earliest game concepts has been to make Desta’s world as approachable to as many people as we possibly can, so instead of trying to make one size fit all, we wanted to make a game that looks and appeals to every type of roguelike gamer. So our desire to make a fully universal and approachable roguelike tactics game for all expands to how we have developed our difficulty modes. Check out our ways to play below:

Want to be immersed in a mystery about life and relationships, and enjoy the story with minimal roguelite aspects? Our new Shortcuts via our Crystal Desta Rest Floors are for you. When Crystal Desta offers a shortcut, shortcut takes you to your furtherest chapter you have progressed to. You start with all of the teammates you would have encountered on the way there.
Prefer pitting your wits against opponents in turn-based tactical battles? That’s where the new Challenge Mode comes in, a collection of brand new standalone scenarios designed to test the most experienced of players in unique ways. Complete these challenges to unlock bonus team mates for Desta's main dream, as well as aid you as you dive deeper into Nightmare Mode.
Are you a roguelike hardcore and have the skill and wits to take on our toughest competition? Then Dream Deeper in Nightmare Mode, now the dream has tougher opponents to face and modified rules. Any HP lost in a previous memory carries over to the next encounter, so be careful and see if you can reach the end of the Nightmare.

In short, we want the Dream Team Edition to be approachable if Desta represents your first time into the world of roguelike and tactics-based storytelling and even more rewarding if you’re a big fan and are always thinking five-steps ahead.

Welcome to the first of many upcoming developer blogs from us - we hope you like hearing more about the making of Desta and we would love to hear from you too!

First off, the big news: Desta: The Memories Between (Dream Team Edition) will RELEASE in a few short months on 26 April 2023!

We always wanted Desta: The Memories Between to have the widest possible audience following its debut on mobile last year, so we’re delighted to share that a new, expanded and enhanced Dream Team Edition will be available for everyone to play!

Our Dream Team Edition is the ultimate collector’s edition and we hope you love it. It compiles major content updates together, including all characters (with new ones yet to be revealed), new game modes (including Challenge Mode and Nightmare Mode), as well a complete game soundtrack composed by acclaimed UK Artist Mansur Brown and a beautiful Digital Art Book! This is the ultimate bundle for fans of Desta and ustwo games!

Dream Team Edition also offers more flexibility for every type of player, featuring:

Shortcuts for story-focused gamers,
Challenge Mode for players wanting to take their tactics to the next level with a variety of surprising and unique challenges to overcome outside of the core game experience, and
Nightmare Mode, a first for ustwo games, is an ultra hardcore gameplay experience for those wanting to fully immerse themselves in the roguelike aspects of memories between.

12 Weeks of Desta

To celebrate Desta’s Steam debut we’ll be giving players tons of exclusive insights between now and release. These ‘12(ish)Weeks of Desta’ will include sneak peeks from the development team, deep dives into the new Dream Team game modes and tutorials on the control system, which has been reimagined for gaming on PC.

We’ll also be revealing the brand new artwork, audio and gameplay that PC players will experience as they fall into Desta’s dreamscapes

Desta: The Memories Between is coming to PC in 2023!

Bringing Desta : the Memories Between to PC means a lot to us, the team are all PC gamers here and we're working hard to get it into your hands for early next year!

Developing Desta: The Memories between has been an incredibly personal experience for everyone on the team, and they have all left their mark on the final game - making this the deepest game we've ever made.

With a diverse ensemble led by Desta (they/them), this is a story of broken relationships, words left unsaid and the chance to explore dreams for answers.

Overcome tactical challenges with perfect throws, shoot spirited trick shots and land sensational hits in turn-based sports-style encounters. As nights progress, Desta will become more experienced and attuned to this surreal world, discover new abilities and craft your own play style as your manoeuvre through the dream-world!

We're hard at work on making Desta feel absolutely amazing on keyboard, mouse and controller and we will also be making optimisations to make Desta look and feel amazing on PC, with 4K monitor support!

Desta: The Memories Between is a tactics game for everyone and this means the team are working new easy & hard modes to ensure players across all tactical skill levels can enjoy Desta to the fullest!
