Normally you just hold to shoot , don't mash. It takes some getting used to but you should be shooting while slowly moving away from the enemy (kiting them) Stop shooting when the enemy gets too close and run back a bit to make space.
Keep your eyes open for movement increase upgrades , one of them allows you to shoot while moving at normal speed, after you get it never stop shooting. (Ideally you want to have this upgrade before the first arena boss the tiger with antlers looking thing that dashes at you, being able to shoot and move fast is very useful for this fight.)
