Singleplayer games have balancing as well.
If you can't handle the grenade launcher, don't use it or If you want an easy mode, just cheat. It's only a singleplayer game after all.

It is a grenade launcher. It launches things that go boom. Things that go boom hurt. Need I elaborate further?

Why should everything share 1 downside? The game would be so samey.
Damage output makes up for it so GL's more of a niche thing that adds variety than trash.

theres an upgrade with the grenade launcher that makes you immune to the explosions just get there and youll be fine.

imo if OP can get there they won't be making this post in the first place. Or perhaps they want to reap the other upgrade benefit without killing themselves.

It's one of the best weapons in the game. You just have to reach the 3-ability screen, where you can take 'immune to explosions'.
Otherwise; skill-issue.
