vase puzzle
can someone please explain the vase puzzle? My friend and I are playing this together and neither of us can understand how it works.
We looked up a video that shows the answer but we still don't understand how they came up with that solution.

The lines and symbols on the vases translate to numbers. Just add up the values of a vase and compare to what's needed. The way to calculate the numbers is by using the notecard in the locked glass cupboard upstairs.

the notecard shows adding or subtracting shapes to equal another shape.
where do you get numbers from?

I don't know if you ever got your explanation, but here's a quick explanation:
The numbers are arbitrary, but for simplicity sake, just substitute the thick line in the first equation for 1. So thick + thick + thick = dots. 1+1+1=3. The second equation is dots + dots - thick = double. So 3+3-1=5. The last equation, the zig-zag + zig-zag = zig-zag is 0+0=0. Look at the lines on the posts and find what it equals and match one or more vases with the same value.
