I'm 57 hours into this game. I've been playing tactical RPGs my entire life. The story on this one is pretty corny and honestly none of the characters have me hooked. It's okay but not great. The characters having unique classes is definitely a unique take on the genre. Learning what combinations of characters to use in each battle is engaging and practicing in the encampment means all characters have a place.

My greatest frustration is the uneccesary difficulty. I'm 57 hours in and it feels like a slog. I'm battling in the encampment constantly just to struggle in the story battles getting one shot by these crazy powerful enemies. I am at Chapter 16 at the battle in the mines and I'm trying not to give up on this game. Finally I realize I need to go tone down the difficulty. So I sleep on it and return the next day. I boot up the game and go to battle options. I look at the difficulty. It says Hard?

What the hell? Why would I have done that to myself? Who invites that level of pain? So I bump it down to Normal and play the next battle, a battle I played the night before and struggled. Yep, smoked em. I honestly feel a weight has been lifted. I may yet enjoy the rest of the game... To be continued.

Love it but definitely get this on sale

Decent, but graphics are just bad (compared to Octopath), and the "golden route" thing with a special ending that needs like 10 specific choices to be made is just awful design. I have no time to replay this game 3 times.
I feel this could have actually been muuuuch better than it actually is; good writing, good concept, totally lacking in execution and development.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you set the voices to Japanese. The English voice acting is horrific and completely amateurish, while the Japanese cast are actual professionals from other games and anime. Trust me, it makes the game so much better to NOT hear the garbage English cast.

Anyways.

Phenomenal. 9/10. The writing is genuinely incredible, which was totally unexpected. I went in expecting fun FFT gameplay with a passable story, and what I got instead was an outstanding story with superlative gameplay. I really can't stress enough just how good the writing in this game is. The writer, Naoki Yamamoto, is truly talented. The man knows how to write interesting, complex characters and to thread them along an intricate plot with a soaring, operatic payoff.

Yes, the gameplay is good too. It's Final Fantasy Tactics but with a better story. The fights are challenging and tuned well. Each character has their own unique set of abilities and upgrades. None of them feels redundant, and most of them are useful.

I don't feel like writing anymore, because I'm tired. I'll just say, though, that this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down, and I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air. In West Philadelphia, born and raised, on the playground is where I spent most of my days. Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool, and all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school. When a couple of guys who were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared, she said, "You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air." I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said "FRESH" and it had dice in the mirror. If anything, I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought, "Nah, forget it, yo, home to Bel-Air!" I pulled up to the house about seven or eight, and I yelled to the cabbie, "Yo homes, smell ya later!" Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel-Air.
