When will you devs learn?
You know... Be diverse without making it such a self righteous pat on the back look at us type of usage, this is where you all fall short. When barret was put into final fantasy 7 he was just there, and everyone loves him and they weren't touting anything other than pushing to make the best game possible.

When you hire a 3rd party company to tell you how to cater to a non-existent audience, you have already lost because the integrity of the game is gone, your focus is misguided where it needs to ge make the BEST game possible for the gamers. Now... However that looks is up to you, it's fine to be diverse but when you make it your only talking point and your top priority, this is what you get.

So? That does not refute what the person said about the character or the quality of the game.

Did Barret work in context and was it a fun game?

When will devs learn ? Maybe when they overcome the addiction of moralising for the masses.
Soon they'll mature enough to when they realise the entire planet doesn't and will never wholly think like they do....that its multi facetted and nuanced.
Some time soon they'll reach a startling inflection point and understand the world is big enough to contain more then one "message" and stop cos playing as our moral superiors...but like I said it's a hard habit to kick!

Once they learn that each and every decision should be made with the following mindset:

"Will it lead to more sales?" (To our actual audience, not the modern one)

We really need to go back to business.
