Alice is Dead

The Steam Mystery Fest felt like a perfect opportunity to update everyone on the development of Alice is Dead: Hearts and Diamonds. Last year, the team was grinding out development, trying to hit some fairly ambitious deadlines. BUT...

We quickly came to realize we were losing sight of the game. Alice is Dead was first made by a pair of friends, largely winging their storytelling, and attempting to tie it all together afterwards. This free-wheeling energy led to many fan-favorite additions to the series. Trying to structure development was blocking off the freedom needed to expand the game in ways that felt true to the originals.

Development

Here is the current state of development:
This new Demo is a near 1:1 remake of the original Episode 1. Our goal here is to drum up some interest, show off Hyptosis' stellar new artwork, and give a taste of how the game looks and runs on a modern engine. The eventual Full Version will have other new content to explore!

After some playtesting among friends and family, we also quickly came to learn: Flash game point and clicks are NOT the same as commercial releases. Duh'doy, I know! Browser point and clicks were player by players who knew the precise rules and interactions of that subgenre. Dropping that as-is in front of modern PC players, and they're totally lost. We need to find ways to bridge that gap!

What's Next?

That said, development has shifted down a gear. While care is being taken to preserve and improve the storytelling and continuity of the series (winging it led to a few contradictions) - rushing things was doing us no favors. This also means we no longer have a projected release date. More will be shared in due time, and thank you for your patience!

And a shoutout to our friends over at Misty Mountain Studio. Their new game, Death Trick: Double Blind is also taking part in the Mystery Fest, and it's looking phenomenal! Between the detailed art style, mystery storytelling, diverse and unique characters, playing card motifs, and an Alys of their own (who was named after the Wonderland character!) this game is certain to appeal to AiD fans!

We are absolutely thrilled to reach this point, and have something we can publicly share!
Alice is Dead: Hearts and Diamonds will be a complete, from the ground up, remake of the original Flash game trilogy!

This new Demo is a near 1:1 remake of the original Episode 1. Our goal here is to drum up some interest, show off Hyptosis' stellar new artwork, and give a taste of how the game looks and runs on a modern engine. The eventual Full Version will have other new content to explore!

We are planning to release the game Episodically, similar to the original series! Episode 1 will release as an expanded experience, widening that original game (and this demo) with new lore, details, puzzles, and more! We will launch the remade Episode 2 alongside this, helping fund the production of our revised Episode 3.

Hopefully stepping back into this world, seeing how things have changed in the last 13 years will build your excitement to revisit Wonderland!

Remaster or Remake? Hearts and Diamonds will be a REMAKE. A Remaster would involved scaling up the game, including some light polish, and shipping it off. This is a from scratch remake. Every single thing is being redrawn, reprogrammed, and recreated. We are excited to take this opportunity to expand the characters, world, puzzles, and lore - making the series larger and more engaging than ever before! Episode 4? Our current commitment is to releasing remakes of the origin...

very much looking forward to the release but...

i remember playing this game back when flash was used to play these type of games so i actually remember the original version, i have played the demo and theres a few things i want to point out. i will say in developers defense maybe my memory isnt as good as i think it is but there definitely appears to be changes from the original version i like to think they have their reasons but the new sounds and ambiance takes away a bit from the originally dark setting and slight chill they mention. i will also add...

Few issues

I loved playing this game back on flash. So i'm excited for it coming back and better. With that, i did notice 2 issues - The text is hard to read, at least on my monitor in full screen with is 1920x1080. The text looks very fuzzy and stretched. - After finishing the demo, and returning to the main menu. The sound wasn't adjusted. The loading into the menu screen is very load. When i went to options. It adjusted it back to my settings....
