The management has been atrocious since the start and I don't think it's even the dev team fault since they were told everything was going right until Bandai took off the plug (However Maruyama already has a bad reputation from the MSGO days):
This is another case of Japanese bizniz (especially investors) completely ignoring the world around them and their competition unless it's about rushing/delaying things. Extremely stubborn about doing things according to their roadmap and not taking advantage of Overwatch 2 shiddin' itself for any reason.
Out of the Beginners' Challenges which lasted AT LEAST a whole month during launch and some special events to get some crumbs (FOMO mechanics + lack of communication), the only chance to get a single new suit was through a kind of lengthy Season Pass for a whole month. Other than that, 10USD for a single character.
Nowadays you can do two dailies for 10 days and that'll be enough to unlock a suit.
Peer-to-peer is impossible coming from this sort of corporation, plus the Japanese are so used to spend a thousand hours in a game just to be shot down forever and jump to another (games as a service, mobile gacha, arcades. Also the consumer there doesn't have rights), and that's exactly what Bandai is trying to do here. Again, it's extremely cheap compared to any creative process you can think of, but, and it would make sense in an ideal world, we can't have that (This is a huge topic that includes consumer rights, ownership and destruction of works with an artistic value so I pass the ball to Ross Scott on this topic if you wanna hear more).
And speaking of the actual game, they should've gone the TF2 path instead of the Overwatch/Paladins one. Its existence is put into question when they focus the game on eSports right from the start and alienated the kind of people that live to discuss what's a real Gundam game.
SDGO was about having dumb fun, MSGO was about having dumb fun. This game was so focused on eSports and following the Overwatch path so hard that you can't mess with the game for the laughs, even on Custom, like being able to make a full squad of a single character: Yet there's no draft or shuffle features, the game struggles so hard to make a player come back after a disconnection and every time there's any error, it shuts down completely.
AND not to mention the absurd region lock that still persists and how they didn't learn about their mistakes, it's easier to shut everything.
This being released after Bandai sacrificed MSGO, the PC version of GBO2 and the Metaverse seem to be some hitting blows for the (overseas) PC consumers. So badly managed that it's impossible not to think about self-sabotage to create good excuses to stick to Japan-only, console-only works.
Ok, enough spaghetti on the keyboard, maybe I got off-rails but I'm fine now.
That's probably explains why I used play SDGO a lot back in the day. My only complaint is how p2w it was. Regardless, I feel like those days of multiplayer games being dumb fun is over since every game has to be either be an e-sport or a carbon copy of other popular games. It feels like there's no unique identity. I understand that every multiplayer game has a competitive scene but my problem is when a game is forces to be e-sport, especially if it's half-baked. It just makes games feel like a chore to play, especially when battle passes and weekly challenges are included.
Personally, I wanted to like this game because I really love Gundam. I hate to say this but the game just feels soulless and is only made to jump the hero shooter trend like 80% of the FPS games in the market that's not indie. The fact the game is shutting down within a year makes me think this. If it was made with love, they would've fixed the major issues like leavers/disconnect by now but they never fixed it. Unless the game is so poorly coded that fixing it is not possible or is just pure incompetence. I guess since Paladins doesn't have backfill so this game might as well not have it.
I'll probably continue throwing my money at Epic-funded Square-Enix ports because me wanting to play Japanese games on the worst system to do so has put me in a position where I can no longer remain loyal to Steam. It would be nice if Japanese game developers were to take PC gaming seriously to such a degree where bribery is unnecessary, but I'd rather a PC port of a game i want to play to exist than not.
No doubt if this was around to compete with the original overwatch and wasn't forced to adhere to the f2p model it could have seen some success. That said it doesn't help that they mismanaged advertising in a big way and pandered to twitch audiences that are extremely disloyal to any specific title.
The thing is one of the main reasons why the game failed is the adoption of the lazy live service method of operation. The game was basically already finished and they just chopped off bits to serve it piecemeal to make it look like the game was under active development. People were able to predict via data mining the exact release order of suits and content.
The updates were slow, bugs never got fixed and content at launch was already repetitive. The reason why your request isn't going to be fulfilled isn't because its too hard to make the game p2p but because the development on the game basically already stopped at launch.
It seems they just left some intern to flip switches in the game which could explain why the balance updates never made any sense. I doubt any of the people who knew how to actually edit the game are even still at the company or even on the project. The remaining staff probably don't even know how edit the key content of the game at this point.
