Absolutely incredible game. If you have the chance to pick it up, I'd highly recommend it. It has its flaws, mind you. The translation is terrible sometimes, but readable. Some of the mechanics are jank. Still, it's a very engaging game once you get past its problems. It is, in my opinion, chinese kenshi.

Yeah no, it doesn't look finished. Also it has the worst translation I've seen in a while. It's like they somehow found and used google-translate from 2010.

I hope things will improve, but since it was 'released' like this, it seems devs are running out of money or patience, so the odds aren't good.

Just join a sect. while at the sect headquarters, some random guy (non sect members) just walk in and rob me. One shot kill me also steal all my stuff. All the sect members inculcate the headmaster just look and shrug.

A pretty damn solid game with, at time of writing, terrible translation.

So let's get the elephant in the room out of the way first; it's a game by a small team in China and they appear to have used some sort of automatic translation. This is good enough for the interface, though it does mean that some concepts don't translate clearly and require a bit of experimentation. The story, however, is a complete trainwreck. I have no idea what the story is or how to progress the main plot.

That being said, the game is still fun and the combination of sandbox gameplay, building, crafting, joining a sect or creating your own holds up even after dozens of hours of play on an early access version of the game. Part of this is that there are many layers with their own decisions to be made. As you add new lands to your map, do you position all the major cities near one another for easy shopping and risk a single bandit clan causing trouble for all of them? Do you join a sect, if so which sect, and when you discover a new sect do you remain loyal to your current sect or start over and learn new kung fu? Do you build a home? How do you protect it from bandits?

Particular high notes are the combat and building systems. The combat is a symbol matching game where you prepare cards with special moves on them in advance and try to simultaneously counter your foe's moves with a rock/paper/scissors system, get enough of certain symbols to set up your super moves, and deal damage and status effects with your attacks. Building in The Matchless Kungfu is easily the easiest building system for structures that I've seen in this style of game - you just plot the floor out, add walls, add furniture, and pick a roof. This produces a stone lion which you deposit all the necessary resources into and the building finishes itself instantly. No need to craft each individual wall or bed, just a simple 'put everything here', so I've actually built a sizable village in this game and building usually turns me off.

I'm sorry, but why isn't this game MUCH more popular. This game has choice, lots and lots of choice. There are 20 sects, all with interesting and differing mechanics, maybe a hundred skills, the ability to own and build whatever you want. You can found a sect, have children, become a eunach and join the royal guard, become an assassin, play a musical instrument, beg for money, wage a war with words instead of fists. There is crafting, there are hundreds of secret events. You build the world one tile at a time and if you don't like it. You can create a whole separate world to use as a sandbox. There is content for a hundred hours minimum.

This is one of the finest games ever made, and yes, there is a lot of jank with the translations, but if you can overlook them, you have an extreme amount of content for very low price.

It's still a broken mess but they are working hard to make it right. hopefully it wont fall on the wayside for another project.

Fun

This game is fantastic. It takes a lot of getting used to because of poor translations but there is a lot of neat content here. Its a sandbox martial arts game that feels like Kenshi but better in my opinion.
