Also open up "Data" folder in your game directory and there find settings.txt - change Music Enabled to False (The music was noisy, so i disabled it)
I never get to any starting setups, I go to run the game and it brings up the Range check error before even the first menu.
1. (right click the space empires V and click properties then run in compatibility mode (windows xp 3)
2. In the same screen. Click all the disable settings aka disable visual themes.
3. disable clear front. (right click on desktop > personalise > display > clear front
4. Enable multithreading in the settings file located in the data folder in your space empires folder. (this will enable the game to use more then one core)
I appreciate the help, I have followed the steps but sadly this has not worked, do you have any other ideas?
How about @arrddave suggestion:

In brief:
Yeah its some recent Windows 10 things that broke it. I have tried various compatibility mode settings with no success.
Edit: I solved my issue by enabling direct play in windows components
Sadely I don't have the direct play option :(
What says it's starting up? Steam?
Oops forgot the link
Bleh what a disappointment.
