Game won't start
Whenever I attempt to start the game I keep getting a range check error, if there any way at all to fix this?

Try running in compatability XP mode

I tried that, but it said that it couldn't find Steam.dll and when I added it it says program failed to start correctly.

Just an off chance, your graphic drivers are up to date?

I was able to run game with these settings - On startup, choose Setup and set:
Video Mode: Windowed
Video Memory Usage: Safe
Also open up "Data" folder in your game directory and there find settings.txt - change Music Enabled to False (The music was noisy, so i disabled it)

I never get to any starting setups, I go to run the game and it brings up the Range check error before even the first menu.

Try:

1. (right click the space empires V and click properties then run in compatibility mode (windows xp 3)
2. In the same screen. Click all the disable settings aka disable visual themes.
3. disable clear front. (right click on desktop > personalise > display > clear front
4. Enable multithreading in the settings file located in the data folder in your space empires folder. (this will enable the game to use more then one core)

I appreciate the help, I have followed the steps but sadly this has not worked, do you have any other ideas?

In brief:
Yeah its some recent Windows 10 things that broke it. I have tried various compatibility mode settings with no success.
Edit: I solved my issue by enabling direct play in windows components

What says it's starting up? Steam?

You tube guide (It does work) to activating Direct Play on Windows 10. It is a Legacy program so might not be turned on. One small difference to the video for windows 10:

Open Apps and features instead of Programs and features
Turn windows features On/Off will not be available, type Windows features into the search bar to get it and then follow the rest of the You tube instructions.

Oops forgot the link

Same here, cannot get it to work. Legacy Direct Play was already checked and makes no difference anyway, still asks for Steam.dll (after enabling compat mode, before it's the range check error).

Bleh what a disappointment.
