Ah, Game Maker. It's the very first game creation engine I used, back when I was in Middle School during the Play Station 2 era of video games. The first time I found out about Game Maker 6 was through a website called caiman.be, which was one of the very first websites where I downloaded a bunch of fan games. Thinking about those times also makes me reminisce about how I used to backup my files through floppy disks and CD's, back before I knew about USB Drives, SD Cards or Cloud Storage.

Game Maker is an engine that's incredibly easy to use. It lets you code either through its own feature called "Drag 'n Drop" or through its scripting language, Game Maker Language. Over the years, many examples and tutorials were created on how to program all sorts of behaviors and functions on websites such as the original Game Maker website, and Simon Donkers' website.

When I first heard about YoYo Games, I had mixed feelings about it. On one hand, another website where we get to share our own games was coming, but Game Maker 7 seemed to make things behave differently from what I was used to. A form of movement code I would often use was shifting an object's position, when setting a horizontal or vertical movement speed would work more efficiently. I can't remember when I first heard about Studio, but it was a point in time when I've sort of fell off from keeping up with the latest news about Game Maker as a whole. To me, Game Maker 6-8 have all the functions I could use, and admittedly I never really did learn the new things introduced in Studio versions of Game Maker.

Throughout 2 decades, I enjoyed casually developing my own games[yonih2.blogspot.com] in Game Maker.

Games made in pre-Studio versions of Game Maker can run on Steam Deck under compatibility settings, but MIDI's don't play, sounds can't play in rapid succession and it seems that sounds can't be interrupted.
