As a game, visual novel party game is a pretty niche genre. I've seen people talk about how fun this game and the entire series is to play with friends, and I will have to take their words for it because I played the game solo. I've owned this game for a while now, and it was something really fun to just keep on my laptop and play a round or two if I had some spare time and wasn't doing anything. If that is what you are looking for, this game fills that role of "random coffee novel" very well.
Recently though, I hyperfixated the game and have been playing it almost non-stop for the last week. I bought the DLC, ran through most of what the game has to offer, and just finished the secret ending. All I have left with the game is checking off the last couple of choices for the sake of achievement completion, and I will be completely finished. It is a weird feeling, being sad that something so beautiful has finished yet so happy that I can get back to normal life.
Overall, this is some of the best writing for a comedy game that I've ever seen. It really lives up to that "Yes, and" of skits where one person will say or do something outrageous, and everything will work to carry that outrageous thought to its final conclusion. Then there are the sound bites where it feels like each voice actor only did voices for the lines they thought would be funniest. I swear, I will hear, "Astaroth! Be FANCY!" in my dreams. It is this great blend of outrageous comedy that is supported so well by the setting the writers have built.
More than anything though, I can't stress enough how impressive the game's writing and dialogue is even outside the comedy. The first two games in this series are dating sims, but while there is a romance component to this game, it really isn't supposed to be the focused. There is such a strong theme of friendship that comes through in this game. The friendship between Polly and Scott on its own is something to love, but then there are the conversations between each of the characters and the player character that do so much to create this bond between you, the characters, and everyone else around. I am almost thirty now, and reading this, I think back to my time in college with my roommates, and even though obviously I never did anything like what these people in this game are doing, I miss it. Then there is the secret ending where everything comes to a head, and.....I don't know a good way to describe it. I think the best thing I can say about this game is that it makes me want to go on a roadtrip myself. I want to appreciate the life I have more, so from that sense, I can honestly say my life is better for having played this. If you are on the fence for buying this because you don't know if you will like it, I say roll the dice. And to the people who made this game....THANK YOU.
