How much of the exploration can i leave til later in the game?

The game world feels pretty large and there are clearly lots of chests, crystals and side quests to explore.

Do i have to do these as soon as possible or can i follow the main story line and then return to do these things later?

You can skip exploration until facing the final boss.

You'll get a notification before the fight actually starts, so you won't stumble into it accidentally.
You can then decide if you want to start the fight or to turn around and start/resume exploring the world instead.

There is no missable content in OH2.
