Synergy Attack ... help

I know the top right bro icon must be in yellow, and have the perks for the weapons to do the Synergy Attack .... I think i just don't get the x x pause x x x ... what are the timings? what is the pause? i am doing Diamond things for the completionist and I cant have consistent Synergy Attack. Tips?

I am so messed up, looks like when i do XXXX pause X sometimes works... When I say it works i said 1 of 10... i just dont understand... Also I noticed the weapon makes a sound but i don't get if there the combo is starting or just need to do the XXX or the XX... anyway i tried the the 3 variants and not working... this system I don't understand it...
