I Fetch Rocks

This is like two games, and one conflicts with the other.
It feels like there's two games here. You've got the logic and puzzle game of trying to hook up the ship, and then you have the meta game of trying to collect rocks.

These two games could work really well together but in this case the rock fetching part conflicts with the logic puzzle game. The problem is that fetching rocks is really boring but you have to endure that to get enough money to purchase modules to improve the ship. Obviously, you can play the sandbox game and have all the modules, but then there's no meta game at all.

The solution, IMHO, is either to make the rock collecting game more enjoyable by focusing on what's fun about newtonian physics in space, and/or to organize the puzzle part of the game into a series of progressive challenges which slowly teaches you how to hook up various systems on the ship.

In my opinion the story contracts do not add much interest because they are all essentially the same thing reworded: go fetch x amount of some element. I don't even read them, I just check the requirements and get what's needed to I can purchase more modules.

Sounds very good!

I'm confused by this. Sounds like you should be playing console games where entertainment is spoon fed. As what you say this game needs, is pretty much exactly what I get from it. You are in control, not the game. Have your own fun with it.

I have 88 hours in game and you have less than 2. Nuff said.

Check the discord for the PDF with my suggestions on improving the rock fetching experience:

Fetching rocks gets a LOT faster when you realise you don't actually have to drag them all the way back. if you aim well you can hook up get them up to speed then release the rocks.

If you've done it right it'll fly back to base on it's own.
I often have 2-3 rocks flying in at a time. a lot less downtime.

Yes, of course, I wrote about this idea on discord in the link above. Currently, there's not a practical method of tossing rocks since the base disappears at medium range, and even when you can see it, if the rock touches the side it's instant failure.

What method do you use to accurately throw them, and how fast are they going?

I lock onto home base with the targeting then line up using the indicators. can't remember speed off the top of my head, a moderate speed.

How do you make sure you are aligned to the opening?

The current state of the game has forced me to upgrade engines and magnetosphere, and progressively goaded me into dreaming up my own spectroscope upgrades, tether system upgrades, and a limiter that keeps the motion damper from exceeding the damage threshold.
