Couple noob questions

Hi, the game is great. But there are things I do not understand.
1) It seems to me, that when in dock, my oxygen is not depleting is it true?
2) How do I transfer data between rooms? If I want to have power consumption output in the cockpit for example so I know how much do thrusters or lasers or whatever drain and how close I am to blackout?

There's a tutorial on binary data encoding at the academy. From what I understood, and from the fact that the only bulkhead data pass-throughs are for the large data cables, it seems you'd have to do all that bit shifting stuff to encode the data.

The update notes mention wireless transceivers, but they aren't unlocked in the early game.
