Shamefully, this is the first and only Assassin's Creed I've ever played. Keep this in mind while reading though, as I cannot compare this game with the other titles since I have no idea what they are like.

First thing's first... address the random freezes! This can be fixed with inputting : 203.132.26.155 127.0.0.1 into the Windows host file [[i]C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts[/i]] which you access through Notepad. I also highly suggest you install the EaglePatch to get improved graphics and controller support. New Players:
Assassin's Creed is a third-person, acrobatic, adventure game, set during the Third Crusade and has you play as Altaïr, a high ranking member of the Order of Assassins who strives to maintain peace over the Holy Land through eliminating figures that disrupt the balance of power. Traverse buildings, jump from roof to roof, engage in un-engaging combat, assassinate would-be targets and become the white-robed assassin of the MIddle-East.

Review:
It's another game I wish had a "maybe" option. Although it's a negative review, I don't consider it to be a bad game, or even one that shouldn't be played, but I've been told many a times that AC2 is the OG experience, so it's probably best to start there it seems. Mind you, this is the first entry of the series and the game is quite dated, but this is the foundation Ubisoft laid for what would become their flagship franchise.

Gameplay:
This was from my understanding supposed to be a successor to Prince of Persia. You'll notice that the two are quite similar, with PoP focusing more on acrobatics and combat, while AC is more about stealth, patience, timing and world immersion. AC also adds a bit of historical fiction, making it incredibly attracted to experience since, in this case, you're set in the Third Crusade, making some key cities of the Holy Land your playground.

Getting into the mechanics of the game, combat isn't its strong point. There aren't any combos, or unique attacks, there's simply timing your attacks, parry or running away. You'll often find yourself in combat scenarios, especially if you intend on doing all of the side-quests, but each encounter you'll be facing numerous swordsmen and executing timed-killing moves. That's it! Since it's an assassin game, it makes sense that combat shouldn't be flashy, but even the stealth-killing bit isn't all that good. You have a trusty wrist-blade that can instant-kill an enemy, and you'll often use this on... well... assassination missions. Sometimes you can kill a target RIGHT IN FRONT of guards and they wouldn't bat an eye, but save a citizen from harm and combat is on. For an assassin game, I felt that there was little ninja play.

Where the game does shine is the world building, immersion and acrobatics. There are four main areas being Masyaf, Acre, Damascus and Jerusalem, with the Kingdom between the path and area that leads to the former. None of these locations are particularly large, but they're large enough for you to have a good time getting some awesome 2008 graphics sights. One of my favourite scenes was climbing the cathedral in Acre to the very top and just looking at the view. The game might be old, but it still looks awesome. Acrobatics isn't nearly as fast-paced as it was in PoP, in fact, at times it's arduously slow, but getting around any of the cities is quite easy unless Altaïr decides to follow his own direction and randomly jump off areas that make absolutely no sense.

Content wise, there are a lot of quests but INCREDIBLY repetitive! Every single memory block will have you literally do EXACTLY the same sh#t as you did before. Climb towers to get a view and unlock quests. Save citizens from thuggish guards. Pickpocket. Eavesdrop. Interrogation. Help fellow assassins. Gather info to finally take down main target. Yes, most games, particularly Ubisoft games have repetitive quests, but something does feel a bit lazy about this one, because even most of the dialogue responses are the same, it feels like a 10+ hour copy paste.

Special note: Drunkards, crazies and beggars are stupidly annoying!!! I have no idea what their purpose was other than just annoying the player. Some cases they make your quest a tad bit difficult, which makes sense, but overall they serve no purpose other than just being a massive annoyance you can do little to nothing about.

This is a minor complaint, but the "quit game" feature absolutely sucks. I have no idea what they were thinking at the time, but to quit the game requires more steps than making a sandwich. I sh#t you not, you have to leave the main instance (wait), then exit the animus (wait), followed by opening a menu to leave the new instance (wait), let the main menu boot and load, choose your profile and ONLY THEN can you quit the game. Smart people will simply Alt-F4, it works like a charm every time.

Story:
This was one of the other saving graces for this game. I actually enjoyed the story and it was one of the main driving points to complete the game. The gist and no spoilers version is that the Knights Templar are looking for the treasure known as the Apple of Eden. Their intent is unclear until later, but the Order of Assassins are instructed with obtaining it before they do, which kicks off the game. After getting an ass whooping and a near death experience for breaking the creed, you're stripped of your rank and cool stuff. Fortunately, Malik, one of your companions during the mission managed to steal the Apple and it's now securely in the hands of the Order. You're given a chance to redeem yourself by assassinating the nine main Templars in the Holy Land to erase the knowledge of the existence of the artefact.

Conclusion:
It's by no means a bad game. In fact, I quite enjoyed myself playing it, even with the repetitive quests and whatever frustrations were thrown at me. That being said, I did find the experience plain and mediocre, not because it was old and dated, but because it felt like there was more filler than actual substance. Keeping it in mind that this was the first of the series, I consider it a great start and I look forward to see how much the franchise improved and changed over each entry.
