It's a platformer where your character handles like a Smash Brothers character. Immediately clicked with me and finished the demo no problem.
"The controls are delayed" Maybe you were doing a bunch of smash attacks inadvertently? That's the only thing I can think of here.
The demo seems to be mostly showing off the earliest levels of the game. I don't expect it to be Ultra Inspired Giga-Brain level design, just something to ease me in. Finding all the collectibles felt breezy in a good way. Did you play the last level in the demo? It rules.
I hope you play it again with a more open mind.

I would say that it's a piece of junk, but many woudn't agree.
As an IT, I'm not the biggest fan of laptops. If it's a few years old, you could try repasting it and see if you have better results.
Also I had a hard time telling which were the enemies and what could harm me, I ended up dying wondering what killed me.
Level design is also a jumbled mess without any coherence.
