Incredibly generic story and quite ugly graphics, which I wouldn't mind if the UI was at least pleasing - it isn't.
Gameplay is okay, but the controls make it irritating to play and battles become a slog.

Honestly, I'd have left no review if not for the "overwhelmingly positive" this game has received.
I really don't understand how, and my expectations were quite high as a result which led to my disappointment.

Maybe the overwhelmingly positive is simply a symptom of Steam still not facilitating a "neutral" or 1-10 scale of reviews...

great game, way better than fire emblem. reminds me a little bit of brigandine.. but it takes way too long to promote to T3 for most of the units, especially melee units. really limits the strategic aspect in my opinion. especially on the cannon ambush stage. you have the perfect unit to block cannon fire, but youll have maybe one if you spend all your items boosting the stats to minimum for the upgrade. doesnt make sense to me. i can get a dragon rider before i can get a sentinel.

A lot of people here will tell you that while the game play is good, the story, music and art are weak. While there is some truth there, I can't say that their is anything "bad" about any of these aspects. I would argue that the game plays things safe with its story, music, and art. Some cool concepts in the story, some unique tracks, push it beyond generic, but not much that hasn't been seen before.

The music is well done IMO, nothing stellar, but definitely fits the tone and never wares on your nerves.

The story gets a lot of flack for being generic, and while they're are some tropes of the genre, their are also pretty cool moments that impact the game in big ways. Various events in the games narrative directly affect several hours of game play, which is all I can say without giving away to much. While I think I'm a little over half way through at the 14.5 hour mark, I've found the story to be engaging enough that I'm invested, even if I'm not blown away by it. As the title suggests its a game about war, and views it more through the lens of good vs evil like a typical Fire Emblem, and less like the Ogre Series which gets into the weeds of how war has no heroes, only winners. The characters are decent, they are more in the vain of archetypal Fire Emblem characters. You have the flirt, the knowledgeable veteran, the fire brand, etc. Nothing standout as far as the characters are concerned, but they are charming enough that you'll care about them.

The game play is where the game truly shines. Squad building like in Ogre Battle with Fire Emblem's turn based engagements. Mixing and matching units to squads and decking them out with equipment, new classes and abilities is as fun as it is addicting. Some squads have been broken since before the double digit chapters. Others, I'm still working on fleshing out. Warlord difficulty as been a decent challenge in that I don't find my self resetting choices much, but I do need to think enough to make it through some of the harder encounters.

I got this for free but I would GLADLY pay the $20 asking price.

Graphics aren't my favorite - very Final Fantasy like... but after giving the game a chance- the game is hands down just PHENOMENAL if you like turn based strategy combat. Very replayable as well... I've played it start to finish 3+ times now
