It's not a sequel. It could be argued that it is a parallel universe to the original, but nothing is confirmed. None of the story from the original is missing here. Some things will be confusing, but will get explained later. Try playing Remake Intergrade, then Crisis Core Reunion, then Rebirth..

It is heavily implied to be a sequel, with time travel occurring.

This one, I think a new player could come along and understand the story a certain way without OG. The sequel to this, Rebirth, things get weirder without knowledge from OG and/or other Compilation of FFVII games.

As for the graphics being "outdated", there are mods that help with this.

Go to FF7 OG's discussion forums here on Steam, there should be a stickied thread that leads to qhimm forums with Tifa's 7th Heaven Modding Platform, and take a look at some of the mods they got over there.

100x improvement, easy.

Some of the backgrounds still look a little dated, but at least your characters don't have huge boxes for hands.
