The first thing is simple, allow more control with the mouse while in the menu. I hate having to navigate with my keyboard in game menus. The second suggestion is instead of changing the color of the button that you are currently highlighting, make an outline around the button instead. In some menus with few buttons, I sometimes have no idea which button I am currently highlighting.
