Maybe it's workshop items that are being updated or downloaded? That would look the same as updating the game?
You can turn off automatic downloading of workshop levels in the online settings.
Perhaps multiple times per day is a little exaggerated, but it feels like it updates so much.... really is pretty much every time I open steam... (There was 2 on the 15th Oct to nit pick :P)
As someone who has zeepkist installed you’re very much exaggerating on the amount of updates.
Also, the game is in early access, what did you expect?
ETA:
The game has received 25 patches, some big some small, over the last 10 months. That means that if you do the math the game got roughly 0.6 patches per week, so less than one patch a week.
ETA2:
you say that you installed it late last night and it has already updated 3 times but the last patch was yesterday around noon. Something definitely isn't adding up.
I never realised joining an online sessions adds map subs to workshop as it downloads them... imho, that's not great if it does. ok, sure, download them to play them as you're on multiplayer, but don't subscribe to them automatically imho :|
It is the default behaviour so you can play the levels again in freeplay/add to your own online playlists (otherwise you wouldn't be able to search them on the workshop if they were in a level pack or the workshop name is different to the level name)
