From a puzzle point of view, I liked that in Trine 2 you could solve puzzles in many different ways. For instance to bring water to an area you could use planks or pontius' shield or zoya's force field.
Also the community was friendlier at the time, people would not kick you for no reason after 10 sec.
But Trine 4 and 5 does things better, like the The quality of assets (textures), you have this lush areas covered in vegetation with tall animated grass in ground and backgrounds (Trine 2 doesn't have that) some physics like you can stick as many arrows into wooden objects with zoya as u want, you have more dramatic views extended towards the horizon in T4 & 5, better character animations, puzzle wise does the puzzles get harder in T2 like on T5 if you play coop?i can't remember, but i liked the puzzles presented in 4(with dlc) & 5 i would even say they are better now, also music has more better tracks imo.
I'm playing Trine 5 atm, i might go and replay Trine 2 just to see how it compares(play at max settings & res etc), a level from the dlc like: Deadly Dustland, i remember that one being visually striking.
Visually, in terms of simply the aesthetic choices, I *would* vote for Trine 5, but nothing ever stays on screen long enough to be meaningful. I'd probably write out multiple paragraphs too, if the game wasn't so much more frustrating that it took away from enjoying the level designs.
I got stuck on some puzzles in Trine 4 dlc and 5 than any puzzles in Trine 2, and again in Trine 5 in co-op they get even harder.
Also, I think the level design has evolved for the better, with levels feeling more organic and cohesive, some parts in Trine 2 feel a little claustrophobic, you walk into this puzzle room, then exit and then enter another cave/dungeon to enter another puzzle room. etc, where in the new installments you feel like you walk a lot and really moving forward with more outdoor scenery and longer levels, also talking about gameplay, the combat is better than ever now, with multiple ways to attack and more skills, also the boss fights are better with multiple phases. I remember Trine 2 having too many portal puzzles where you could just use self levitation with 2 planks and fly over the puzzle, sure you could disable it but still.
Also in 4 & 5 and find this secret rooms with chests that require solve a puzzle to get it(don't remember T2 having those). Anyway Trine 2 is a masterpiece, but for me this is not a franchise that you can say the older games where better, i'm actually happy with the way it took, feels more polish and fun in some aspects. The dlc of 4 (Melody of Mystery) was amazing, hoping we get one for 5.
I played Trine 2 the other day to see how it compares, i played it at max settings, res, all of that, and yea looks amazing. I even took some screenshots of how good it looks, some parts can easily rival Trine 4 & 5, but overall as i mentioned before, Trine 4 & 5 also have that fairy dreamy look that you like of Trine 2 in some levels, while also having some amazing outdoor scenery with more natural outdoor lighting. Also i think the most beautiful backgrounds that had kept me like in awe just admiring the scenery, come from the newer ones (but i remember being extremely impressed with Trine 2 back then as well).
You could say that in some parts Trine 2 looks a bit too dark, even when there's a lot of glowing objects around etc, sometimes can even look a bit strange, because a small glowing object in background is lighting too much around, but again when it does it right, some parts can look even better than the newer games, also if it had ray tracing that would be a different story. Anothing thing i'll give it to T2 is you notice more the dynamic lighting, with more glowing objects in background creating cool shadow cascades. Anyway i really like the look of all trine games, even T3 have some parts looking better than 2 and the new ones. One thing you can say is the trine games are unmatched in the 2.5d genre.
One more thing, gameplay wise it improved a lot, in Trine 2 you can't jump low or high depending on the sensitivity of how you press the jump button. Where in the new ones you can jump depending the height you want, and you even have a grabbing ledge animation, that's a big improvement there for sure.
Love all the puzzles and most of the monsters are doable but I hate that I can't just enjoy the puzzles without the compilation monster near the end that simply requires grinding to do...not puzzling your way through it but fight after fight. I play Trine games for the physics, the graphics and the puzzles and the ability to 'tone down' the endless grinding would be nice. It would be nice if the game creators realized that there are those of us who either don't enjoy or are past the lightning fast reflex age who love these games and put in a slider for 'ferocity' or the ability to remove the need for it entirely.
