No magic here

I would guess there will be magic considering we have a flaming sword already and the enemies are magical

Flaming sword can be achieved without magic. I like the Lore behind that devs have revealed that this is more of a medieval what if Kingdom of Mercia had to deal with nightmares invasion. I hope there won't be too much of magic if they add it. Its really cool right now.

how do you medieval explain a flaming shield that explodes in omnidirectional vectors?
Magic in this game works somewhat similar to Lord of the Rings and not at all like Dungeon's and Dragons. Magic is supernatural beings using supernatural powers, you cannot learn magic the same way a D&D wizard can by studying. All supernatural abilities the order has access to including Edwin's flaming sword/barrier has its source from Elosan supernatural powers. Visargo and Aurelia who do use a lot of supernatural powers get them by subjecting themselves to dark essence, they don't seem to study anything.

a pity, it would make it a whole heap more fun
I wouldn't say its LOTR-like, and no studying involved. There is a fair amount of magic as many abilities are certainly magical in nature. Rogues hide in plain sight, the lightbringers healing, meriks armor buff, edwins sword, flame blast, magic exploding shield, etc. Vizargo didn't just pick up a glowing rock and suddenly gain various abilities. I tried crouching down in the middle of the room one time and even made a voooop sound effect like in WoW, but somehow everyone could still see me so I'd gather theres some magic involved...

That said, there does not appear to be any direct damage "wizard" equivalent, so that would not really make sense.

However, it can be reflavored however one would like.

I wouldnt mind seeing a "rogue" hero, who could also be reskinned as an Inventor. Would be ranged, but more like an archer shooting twin hand crossbows or some such at a fast rate. Would more faster than normal.
Passive would be a dodge that when he would take damage, his passive pops and he avoids it and maybe rolls back a bit... or even fires a shot back at what attacked him/her. Then the passive starts recharging.

One could use grenades instead of fireballs, maybe drop a clockwork pet of some kind that attacks enemies for a medium duration instead of summon elemental, etc.

I think it would be great. Already you have lot's of magic stuff like Edwin's fire, the bow guy and the red girl doing lighting.
