As for merchant vessels, let's look at the knarr. They were about 13.8 meters long (45 feet), 3.4 meters wide (11 feet), and had a draught of 84 centimeters (33 inches). Compared to lonships, they required smaller crew and could carry much larger cargo - up to 4.1 tons. Some ocean-going versions, larger and wider, could carry up to 13 tons of goods. These ships had an open construction with partially enclosed decks that contained holes for oars, which were necessary for maneuvering while approaching the shore. However, smaller crew and bigger size translated to being reliant on sail, as the main force of propulsion. 
As you can probably guess, ships will be an integral part of our game, and their production will be the responsibility of the Shipwright. Building a ship is both time-consuming and costly. The Shipwright begins by finding an oak tree trunk, which will serve as the keel, the backbone of the ship. Frames, also known as ribs, are then added. The revolutionary clinker planking technique is used, with overlapping planks that are split and fitted together. It's this technique that gave Viking ships such an advantage over other ships. The remaining wooden components include the deck, mast, oars, and rudder. The structure is held together with valuable iron rivets. Lastly, a sail was needed, created on looms (by a Tailor).

Starting from the spring desired by the Vikings, the player will feel stabilized and have the chance to supplement losses after the cruel conditions of winter. Again, there are sources of food that were inaccessible during the winter season, and herbs can now be collected to cure Ill and raise health. Migration can also be expected within this period. 
Summer will be the best time for aggressive expansion both within the village and on the world map since the settlement situation should be already stable as every building will return to normal functioning. This is the period when the player should feel the strongest and most eager to take actions.
Autumn is a good period to gather resources and harvest food for survival when winter comes. Players can trade their goods for the needed supplies or just to increase the wealth of the settlement. In autumn we will have the materials due to the long availability of all buildings and settlers. 
Winter is the hardest time of the year. Players will be focusing mostly on the survival of their settlement as many of the buildings will not be available, weakening the economy and food production. Providing enough accommodation, heating the houses, having enough food and clothes, and correct management of the settlement, like dynamically assigning professions to the villagers, will be essential to minimize the negative influence of the winter. Unprepared players will be fighting for survival, while those who manage to get ready for this harsh condition will be able to use that time for troop training.

The basic planned regions consist of forests, settlements, and the sea. Each region affects some aspects of the game like currently playing ambient sounds and functionality of some buildings that require a specific region to work.
For the difference, the sea is a region pre-defined by the map geography (distance from the shore) and can't be changed by the player. 
The settlement area range is mostly dependent on the player since its range grows with the number of buildings within the area.

When talking about the possibilities of responding to changing settlement needs, we also can't overlook the function of demolishing buildings.
The player can cancel the demolition, but only until the workers have started their work. When this happens, the building will already be demolished in the next few steps.

Hello fellow Vikings!
What piqued your interest the most? Well, obviously, swords. In our ninth article we covered the nitty-gritty of Viking ironworking. Did you know they extracted iron from bogs? It was a deep dive into historical methods to faithfully replicate them in Viking City Builder. The next logical step was showing the whole arsenal of deadly weapons from our game, both ranged and intended for melee. Including, but not limited to: seax, spear, skeggox and mighty Dane axe. Give that one good read and perhaps tell us what weapons you personally would like to see?
However, all that work and fighting gets pretty tiresome, yet Vikings still took their leisure time seriously. Besides feasting and drinking, their activities were often a combination of fun, competition and training. Things like arm wrestling, sparring, swimming (while trying to drown each other) or board games. They also spend time caring about hygiene, taking frequent baths and combing hair.
Our team also wanted to give you a sneak peek into the creative process and each department chimed in. Programmers wrote about Building System Roles, while artists presented processes of creating animations, preparing sounds and converting 2D to 3D while making the UI of the main menu.
Jewelry to raise his or her happiness level and providing your settlers with warm shoes, leather belts, and sacks will surely make them more satisfied as long as those items last.
Luxury goods are categorized just as standard products. From simple personal items like combs, shoes, and belts, up to pottery and expensive jewelry which requires rare materials such as amber and a drop of silver currency to be made.
The value of those goods makes them also a great trading asset. When converted into silver or other on more needed resources on the diplomacy and trading route.

Some of them sound one-to-one. This means, for example, that when recording the sounds of chopping wood, I chopped firewood. Using two types of axes. I scored some solid cardio in the process ;)
Some of the samples, however, were recorded based on sounds that only mimic what you will hear in the game. How does record digging in the mud avoid an outdoor recording session and thus a mass of unwanted sounds? Birds, combines, cars, or neighbors who just decided to mow the lawn can be a really big problem! The best solution was to "put" the mud in a wheelbarrow and then carry it and its contents to the garage. After that, all that was left was to wallow in the mud with my hands or dig with a shovel. Worked like a charm!
What sounds similar to forging a helmet? A metal scoop hit with a hammer fits perfectly! Tanning leather? Old leather welding coats worked quite well! Extracting honey from a beehive? The sound of ripping oranges sounds good! I could give many more such examples, but let's move on to the next production process - a sound implementation.
When preparing sounds for character animation, I created a randomly played list of sounds each time, thus avoiding the artificial repetition of the same samples. That's why the animation of one hammer strike on an anvil has about six modulated variations. When creating the sounds of work and life in buildings, I decided to use the same method. This way when you listen to the work of, for example, a Smelter you’ll never hear an identical loop of sounds.
Even when picking the same model, finished construction will be different from each other. We made a system that changes finer details. For example: in the yard of the first house you built, there will be a chair, buckets and a cart, but in the second one you'll find barrels and sacks of grain. The same goes for walls - ornaments will vary from building to building. As for now, we implemented Shield Generator with different patterns and dyes. Here we'd like to ask you a question - should it stay that way or would you prefer to have the whole village decorated with your colors? 
Last of all (for now) are self-contained decorations. Those need to be placed by the player and (for now) we want them to be purely cosmetic. Vikings may use them in their spare time and as placeable objects, there are collisions (using gates and fences one can force settlers to change their established paths). There are different styles and stages, some are small, while others are sizable. Every one of you should find something which will satisfy your taste. We're still ironing out the kinks, but here's a little sneak peek - Gates! Decide whether you want to display all the colors of the Viking world or intimidate guests with grizzly remains.
