Across the Obelisk
What's up with the expansions?
All dlcs have mixed reviews while the base game has mostly positive reviews. Is it a paradox situation where there too many dlcs and they are too expensive, or are they just bad overall?

As a possible new player it looks too overwhelming to buy it...

Just started playing again but from what I can tell from reviews it's price related and some potential crashing? Haven't got too many DLC but they look interesting
Most of the negative reviews come from Paradox and launcher that is currently not mandatory, I would estimate that they make above 50% of negative reviews.

Base game ia amazing, you do not need to buy DLS to have a blast playing over 100 hours. I would wait with DLC to see if you like the game, because most DLCs are quite costly compared to what they give you IF you compare them with the base game (base game is dirt cheap!). I would say DLSc are worth to buy, but only if you like the base game.

I do not have any of the DLCs, but I can say the base game has a lot of substance and definitely worth a pickup, especially if you have a friend or three

My understanding is that the mixed reviews from the DLCs are for a different reason for every one. The devs have learned from the reviews of older DLCs and are constantly trying to improve with the newer ones.

My understanding of the issues are:
1. Wolf Wars - Has a story line that is separate from the main gameplay loop, which many people feel is a waste of time. All subsequent DLCs have impacted the main Adventure gameplay with new zones/characters.
2. Ulminin - Many people felt it was too expensive since the price of the DLC was near the price of the full game, and some people wanted access to just the characters and not the zone or vice versa. Future DLCs have the zones separated from the characters, and offer discounted bundles if purchased together.
3. Amelia - Released along with the Paradox Launcher, so some negative reviews are about that. The Launcher is now optional. Also released as a solo character with nothing else added, so some people were hoping for more.
4. Nenukil - Most of the negative replies seem to be around the gameplay aspects, and I will agree, he is not for everyone.
5. Obsidian Uprising - This is the subzone that released with Nenukil, and some people didn't think it was worth the price.
6. Sahti - Main complaint is that the DLC area is too difficult and the enemies are not fun to fight against, which it has been acknowledged by the devs and will be addressed in an upcoming patch
7. Bernard - Again gameplay, some people just don't like the way he plays.
8. Sigrun - Only has 1 negative review for being too expensive.

I will wait until there is bigger discount. The game is too expensive for what it offers. I consider current discount to be a pretty cheap move: Giving main game a big discount to make it visible and then giving overpriced DLC only a small discount.

You can safely ignore the DLCs, base game is amazing and dirty cheap for what it offers, even without a discount. DLCs when compared to base game are really expensive, but if you look at them, without comparing to the (cheap) base game, they are okayish.

The point is, base game have wxcellent value. DLCs are acceptable, if you like base game, if they are too expensive for you, ignore them, you will safely get 100+h from base game.

the great youtubes has some channels with content.

otherwise 1 general rule until you know what you are doing:
1 tank that focuses on block and debuff (example: magnus with howls + block cards)
2 damage dealers. on lower difficulties it does not matter much, but i would not mix lightning with fire, bc fire needs burn charges and lightning wants the enemies wet.
1 healer, for healies and dispel.

you can also replace 1 damage dealer with a support to give the remaining damagedealer more dps (example: gustav with song of sharpness -> increases dps of characters that use pierce and shlash)

every character besides healers and some of the warriors usually has 2 damage types that they synergize with.

example build:

Sylvie - for pierc dps + sight charges reduce resistance for pierc
nezglect - for healing and putting down of sight charges and insane charges
gustav - for support: doing a little psychic damage, putting down insane charges and buffing sylvie
heiner/Magnus: for putting down block and slowing down/taunting the enemies.

They don't add nearly enough content for their cost. Especially new characters, new characters are basically 2 perk trees with maybe 1-2 new cards. They'll change the way you build, but they don't really add much new to the game, especially considering most characters don't even have much in the way of animations and such. The current DLC practices are extremely greedy, buying all the DLC costs around £30 while the base game is £15. Do all the DLCs add double the content of the base game? Not even slightly, not even half of the content of the base game, it's kinda a joke, really.

Let's agree to disagree.
While expansions are expensive compared to the base game, we have to take into account that base game is severly underpriced. Do not compare a product to an underpriced product, this way it is just not fair. Would you still compare value of DLC which is not free to the "value" of free base game?
DLC for a game that has an ending similar to the phrase from old movies. The End. Just so you know, I won't buy anything else from this game. The ending is a slap in the face to the players who bought the game. Not even each character has their own ending. It's too disappointing.

People are cheap and complain about paying for content

£60 for all the dlc when the base game is £15. It's not being cheap, it's called respecting yourself. The idea of shaming people for being smart with their money is some lame ♥♥♥♥.

Or.... It's a $15 dollar game that gives literally hundreds to thousands of hours of gameplay and the DLC is adding a nice amount of content for people that enjoy playing. Would you rather the base game be $200 and the DLC free? Because that would mean a LOT less players. Not to mention only one person needs to own DLC for the entire group to go to that region. Nobody is forcing you to buy the new characters. They even split up the new zones and characters so people can choose what they want to buy (or not)

Sands of Ulminim (on sale) is about the only DLC worth it here. After that the full weight of Paradox kicked in and they chopped everything into component parts that were not even vaguely worth their value. You can still access the DLC stuff to "test it out" by playing with someone who has it and swapping chars with them or running through the areas in the run with them if you want. Since all the enemies still insist on jumping you in random formats anyways, I fail to see the point in paying for them normally. Base game is more than enough variety and content to last you a few hundred hours, and if after that you want variety, by all means drop $5 (hopefully less) on a character you've hopefully bench tested via a mp run in that time.
