Base game ia amazing, you do not need to buy DLS to have a blast playing over 100 hours. I would wait with DLC to see if you like the game, because most DLCs are quite costly compared to what they give you IF you compare them with the base game (base game is dirt cheap!). I would say DLSc are worth to buy, but only if you like the base game.
My understanding of the issues are:
1. Wolf Wars - Has a story line that is separate from the main gameplay loop, which many people feel is a waste of time. All subsequent DLCs have impacted the main Adventure gameplay with new zones/characters.
2. Ulminin - Many people felt it was too expensive since the price of the DLC was near the price of the full game, and some people wanted access to just the characters and not the zone or vice versa. Future DLCs have the zones separated from the characters, and offer discounted bundles if purchased together.
3. Amelia - Released along with the Paradox Launcher, so some negative reviews are about that. The Launcher is now optional. Also released as a solo character with nothing else added, so some people were hoping for more.
4. Nenukil - Most of the negative replies seem to be around the gameplay aspects, and I will agree, he is not for everyone.
5. Obsidian Uprising - This is the subzone that released with Nenukil, and some people didn't think it was worth the price.
6. Sahti - Main complaint is that the DLC area is too difficult and the enemies are not fun to fight against, which it has been acknowledged by the devs and will be addressed in an upcoming patch
7. Bernard - Again gameplay, some people just don't like the way he plays.
8. Sigrun - Only has 1 negative review for being too expensive.
The point is, base game have wxcellent value. DLCs are acceptable, if you like base game, if they are too expensive for you, ignore them, you will safely get 100+h from base game.
otherwise 1 general rule until you know what you are doing:
1 tank that focuses on block and debuff (example: magnus with howls + block cards)
2 damage dealers. on lower difficulties it does not matter much, but i would not mix lightning with fire, bc fire needs burn charges and lightning wants the enemies wet.
1 healer, for healies and dispel.
you can also replace 1 damage dealer with a support to give the remaining damagedealer more dps (example: gustav with song of sharpness -> increases dps of characters that use pierce and shlash)
every character besides healers and some of the warriors usually has 2 damage types that they synergize with.
example build:
Sylvie - for pierc dps + sight charges reduce resistance for pierc
nezglect - for healing and putting down of sight charges and insane charges
gustav - for support: doing a little psychic damage, putting down insane charges and buffing sylvie
heiner/Magnus: for putting down block and slowing down/taunting the enemies.
While expansions are expensive compared to the base game, we have to take into account that base game is severly underpriced. Do not compare a product to an underpriced product, this way it is just not fair. Would you still compare value of DLC which is not free to the "value" of free base game?
