R.I.P. to a game that had something going for it, but the publisher was simply.... careless.

Super Mecha Champions – A Memorable Mecha Experience

Super Mecha Champions was an exciting battle royale game where players piloted unique mechs in dynamic battles. The anime-inspired graphics and smooth controls made the gameplay both engaging and enjoyable. The unique abilities of the mechs kept every match thrilling, and it’s a game I thoroughly enjoyed while it lasted!

Look, I don't need to write an essay for this review, this game was not mechanically good.


This doesn't need explaining given that you‘re looking at a failed mobile game that never eclipsed 3000 concurrent players on Steam, but it needs to be stated.

Many of the reviews on the now-hidden store page insist it was somehow the best thing ever made. I don't know how they come to that conclusion, but it just objectively wasn't.

Walking, jumping, crouching, aiming, rolling, using items or abilities, the majority of actions in this game were sluggish and unresponsive, with audio design for the most part about as tasteful as a paper bag.
Sure, you could tell what you‘re hearing, but it wouldn't make you feel anything.


However, what made this game fun, what made me spend 100 hours in it despite having loads of mechanically superior options to play at any time, wasnt what it was, but what it wanted to be.


The hybrid gameplay between mech and pilot is very rare to see executed as dynamically as this, having a mech fight in the streets and on the roofs before sending in one of your mates to sweep pilots out of the rooms is a gameplay dynamic that – in a way – made this game the only game to ever really come close to the niche Titanfall fills.

Then there was character customisation and loadout crafting to consider, where your pilot's secondary ability could be subbed out for the secondary of any other you have unlocked,
mechs could have a set of upgrades mounted to tailor them to your playstyle, and even in a match you could decide on which core upgrade you wanted depending on the other players in the lobby.

Each match had a slightly different flow thanks to the selection of sub-gamemodes, further helping keep things fresh.

There was so much stuff in this game that was just cool, and for me and the rest of the small playerbase, that uniqueness, that spice, was enough to gloss over the meh-at-best core gameplay.

What definitely did not help matters however, was how bad this game wanted you to know that it was indeed a mobile game in form and function.

The tutorial with forced button prompts, a relationship system, random gacha cosmetic unlocks, ten thousand daily tasks to check off, buttons to press, and minor side things to achieve, all of course parading you through its wide selection of menus to spend more money and so much more, basically having to interact with any menu in this game was a huge chore.



I do think that if the core dev team of this game were to sit down on a proper engine, focus on fluidity and core functions, and stick to a reasonable monetisation model, these same ideas could have been an absolute banger game.

However, that's not the timeline we live in.
In reality, despite several clearly passionate devs trying to carry the project, this was a NetEase product, so it was wrung dry with minimal focus on the things that matter and then tossed away.


For anyone interested in giving the game a go, i'm honestly expecting the dedicated playerbase to get custom servers running at some point, as many other failed games have managed in recent years, however at the time of writing i know of no such effort.

If I do ever hear of such a thing, I‘ll be sure to edit this, as those kinds of projects deserve all the love and support.
