Ah, GBO2... does recommending this make me a bad person?

If you're a competitive Gundam fan, there is legitimately nuanced and satisfying PvP combat that blends both melee fighting and shooting pretty well. There is some PvE, but the content is limited and does not offer much in replayability.

Unfortunately, other than that, it just might be one of the worst games you'll ever play that somehow manages to scratch some strange Gundam-game-deprived itch. I'm going to try to list the good and the bad of this game, but I'm certain like the good little indentured Bandai servant I am I will notice something I accidentally omitted from the bad list that bothers me the next time I inevitably login for more.

If you're already a player of this game and looking for ragebait, or just trying to validate how much you hate it despite the fact that you know you're gonna grind that Rated 500 Cost Ground rotation tomorrow, I see you. And I get you. Mostly because I'm clearly projecting and if you find that relatable just know that yes: there is something wrong with us.

But if you're someone looking to get into this game . . . ?

I have a really hard time recommending that you should. I only decided on "Yes" to recommend because if you are competitive, and you are a pretty die hard fan, you're probably gonna gleam SOME level of satisfaction from the combos- and the spacing- and the quirks of shooting- that you will all eventually learn if you stick with it. But If not, I think you're gonna spectacularly waste your time and be truly baffled by how this game has any players at all outside of Japan.

To start, the good:

- Satisfying PvP combat
- Ridiculous roster of mechs/mobile suits to play as, one for almost any style of player
- An optional tutorial with reasonable incentives to complete
- Simple but effective map design

Great, now that that's out of the way, the bad:
===

- Endlessly frustrating PvP combat, toxic players, desync, servers, matchmaking, netcode or whatever people think that means.

- Combat that despite feeling nuanced can at times mostly just feel like you are becoming a professional at cheesing people. Stun locking is a core mechanic and is essentially how you deal any meaningful amount of damage for most mobile suits.

- A ridiculously large roster of suits many of which have been power crept and outclassed by new releases over the years.

- A tutorial that is spoon-fed to you piece-meal, making it take probably 3 times longer than it should.

- Simple map design that somehow made navigating high-ground, slopes, and ledges a more awkward experience than speaking to the scantily clad girl in the hub area who is WAY too excited to take your in game currency.

- Is a pack opening gatcha game designed to be addictive.

- Clunky, difficult to parse UI that is typical of many Japanese games where it's just a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of information.

- High skill floor, even higher skill ceiling... which could be a positive but really tests your patience considering how lacking the rest of the game is.

- Matches are short, but finding a match is probably just as long, and forget it if you want to play with a friend. Which, you basically can't play with a friend, but misery does love company so knock yourselves out and feel free to try. I have spent probably more than half of my time in this game just matchmaking and navigating menus that somehow makes new Call of Duty menus seem intuitive. And if you want to count the amount of time lost being ganked and stun locked, and long respawn timers on top of that, that's even less time playing!

- A majority Japanese player base means you better get used to high ping and playing this game like it's your graveyard shift job if you're a gaijin like me. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the playerbase is nauseatingly passive aggressive and all of the preset chat options (since there is no voip) will take on brand new toxic sarcastic meanings that you will learn quickly.

- PS3-quality lighting, textures, and overall visual fidelity.

- Awful default control scheme even on controller, and I do not recommend playing what is ultimately a console port on your mouse and keyboard unless you are a masochist.

- Free-to-play grind that can sometimes give the illusion that it is fairly generous with rewards, but you will realize quickly that although you'll rapidly build a collection of suits, the edge you'll need won't be just about having good mobile suits to play as, but rather all of the little things you will also need to collect for their loadouts and stats.

- Limited and slow camera/aim sensitivity when playing as what should be nimble traditional combat vehicles or infantry for no discernible reason other than actively discouraging you from playing what seems like is going to be an important part of the game but is mainly just the best way to piss everyone, including yourself, off.

- Disconnect penalties that for some can be unfair.

- The mere existence of these phrases: "Failed to form teams" and "failed matchmaking". You will learn to hate them.

- Requiring all players in a 10-12 player lobby to ready up after matchmaking for 5+ minutes or else it closes for casual/quick play matches.

- Forcing SBMM using your Ranked Rating in quick matches, making it impossible to find lobbies it will allow you in, especially if in a group or party with varied ratings.

- Menu input lag on PC that does not exist on the Playstation, but
thankfully does not exist in combat.

- Meaningless hub world instead of a main menu made awful to navigate because again- not being in a mobile suit is awful for no reason at all.

- Desaturated mobile suit colors and terrible specular highlighting that fortunately you can fix (But you gotta grind to the right level to customize first... why? Who knows!)

- A clear and established meta with every suit release that if you don't play in a rated match, people passive-agressively throw fits over, or waste everyone's time by choosing to disconnect during the 2-minute long pre-match timer instead of risking their rating when the team composition is not meta.

- Probably 60% of the playerbase doesn't know how any of the game modes work, or just choose not to care.

- Probably 80% of the playerbase doesn't know how a medal works.

- Game volume is way too loud and mixed poorly. (Do not wear your headphones on your first boot.)

... and a lot more I certainly just forgot about.

So again, even if you are a diehard-competitive-Gundam fan, why would I recommend this game to you?

In the end, of all of the games I have ever loved to hate or hate to love, somehow, this one has been the most fun. There can be something poetic about loving things that are objectively terrible. If video games were food, this would be that one fast food drive-through that you can never count on and you will probably just hate yourself for eating.

But sometimes, sometimes... you're fortunate enough to be there at just the right time when the food was just made fresh, and it satisfied that one craving you had for the last week.

Was it your best option?

No. Of course not.

But it was right there, and you knew exactly what you were getting into anyway.

And when the lowliest of establishments surprise you with a quality meal, you learn that even things as hopeless as this are capable of giving joy. You were there for one of the good ones. You almost think if you can figure out why or how, it'll all be worth it. Almost.

As a Gundam fan and a gamer, I take what I can get.

This is a terrible life lesson.

This game is one of the only good gundam games we have, and practically all the reviews are warranted and true. The connection is peer-to-peer, the game itself is a PS4 port, the penalty system for disconnecting is severe, every one of these highly advanced mobile suit have a giant blind spot on their left side, and even if you get past all of that, it is indeed pay to win. Powercreep is putting it lightly, as GBO2's very own rock-paper-scissors system between generals, raids, and supports goes out the window when the most recent banner suit is even stronger than the mobile suit that preceded it. This game could have been good but Bandai just doesn't know how to make good gundam games, or at least any that they wanna share with NA.

I lost connection in the tutorial which reset my entire pilot. I then completed what I thought was the only tutorial and it threw me into another one. I then finished it and asked for help in the chat and half my message was censored. I couldn't get to an online battle so I tried to AI one and uninstalled the game.
