Yes you can!

You only need to download the dedicated server (you can find the dedicated server files in the tools section of your steam library -> "Battle Cry of Freedom - Dedicated Server") and then just use it to run our own server. You might need to portforward the ports 8262 and 8263 on your router.

Should you be unable to join your own server when selecting it from the server list you can always press the "Custom IP" button and put in your IP + the Port (would look like this for example: 123.23.9.0:8262) and your admin password.

It is no problem to run the server and the game on the same computer. Just make sure you set an administrator password, so you can log in as administrator and then are able to adjust all of the server/map settings to your liking. It is not hard to do at all. Then you can for example play commander battles with and against bot (AI) commanders, same goes for deathmatch, team-deathmatch, human vs. bots, etc.

That said you are missing out not playing with other players as that can be lots of fun. Also in all game modes Bots are spawned - even in commander battle modes - if not enough players are there. So effectively you always have opposition when you play online - and when you play online you always have the chance that other players will join. In my experience, when you join a Human vs. Bots match alone other players will join soon after (and the more are in the more will come).

Aside from that there are still events being hosted by a handfull of us (just the other day we had about 25 players in a cutom Humans vs. Bots match). It just depends greatly on your timezone. For example there are usually lots of Chinese players active around 13:00 UTC/GMT which can be pretty fun, but depends on what ping you are able get when joining their servers.

Hope that helps.

Hi, DMW, just to confirm, I still need internet connection to host the server and play with bots, and I can't launch the game and play with bots completely offline, right?

That is a good question actually, as there are indeed some games that can not be played without an internet connection.

I have never tried to run either the BCoF or my BCoF server "offline", but - at least in theory - it should work completely offline too (see no immediate reason why it should not work, if the game allows you to start it in offline mode). Just give it a try.

But even if you run everything "online", you can always just put a password on your server, so nobody will be able to join it anyway (I do the latter for example whenever I test any new custom map I made).

You always have to keep in mind though that the Bots are not very bright, so it is often easy to "outsmart" them (especially in the commander battle modes), so at the end of the day, the game is much more challenging and fun to play with/against human players.

Have fun and maybe I see you in-game!
