How playable are the keyboard controls?
I'm not too sure about these controls. Do they just take some getting used to, or am I better off switching to Gamepad?

Personally, the KBM system is better in terms of precise control. It is wonky at first but it makes more sense the longer you play.

The scroll wheel adjusts Sam's speed, so it's easy to set him to never make noise and keep him moving as fast as possible. Using the joysticks was far less precise with constant throttling up and down in speed.

Shift is an odd choice for jumping but it also lets you vault low cover or climb things with ledges to grab. It follows other options like letting you quick release and fall from ladders and vertical pipes. You'll also need to use it to hold breath when aiming with he scope.

Spacebar is the interact key to grab guards or to open doors and hack terminals. To open a door slowly, hold space bar at the door and use the scroll wheel to "open stealth" and then release space to perform it.

Thanks for the advice. Got any tips for a beginner?

Start on normal, it's not easy just because it's the lowest difficulty, It's the devs intended experience. Hard and expert are challenge modes where the AI is given a lot more sensitivity to any sort of screw ups like if your light meter barely goes up you'll be spotted. Don't fret over the end mission score not being 100%, that will be a thing way later once you've beaten the game and want more to strive for.

For load outs, go with Redding's recommendation, as it gives you a mix of stealth and assault load outs so you can play around with all of Sam's tools. Don't be afraid to get spotted or to die and lose. Just think of what you did that lead up to that and avoid doing it again.

Thanks for the advice. I started on Hard because I thought exactly what you said. I made it to the second level, but I failed a few objectives including saving the hostage and have been hardstuck on Level 2 since

Just so you know, there is nothing you can do to save Morgenholt on the first level. If you distract his torturers before the shocks that normally kill him off, he's still dead. Those kind of objectives will say "cancelled" at the score screen rather than failed or incomplete, and also won't count against your score.

I spent nearly an hour trying to save him lmao. Pretty obvious in retrospect that you can't save him. A ton of voice lines directly reference Morgenholt being tortured to death and the dialogue when they're torturing him also imply he's been mostly dead for over an hour.

Thanks for confirming.

Can’t for the life of figure out the key ins to stealth kill up close. Is it some other key bind not listed in the settings?

You won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn with a controller

And you're in a stealth game where you absolutely positively have to get a headshot, first shot, or else you're in alarm mode and the whole level is alerted

Being able to move slightly better instead of just moving the camera around to re-orient your cardinal directions is a much much worse trade off

There isn't gonna be 30 foot wide head hitboxes like there is on a console game
