A rather fun and atmospheric game. Thymesia follows an amnesiac plague doctor-esque warrior striking out to regain his memories and save his kingdom from an alchemical apocalypse.

Pros:
The combat - Thymesia boasts a very fluid and fast-paced combat system. There are two forms of damage you will deal; wounds and damage. When you strike an enemy with your normal attack or parry one of theirs, you will deal damage which will be converted into wounds, which you can then turn into permanent damage with your secondary attack. Be careful though - enemies will eventually regenerate any wounds they have if you aren't quick enough.

Alongside your two main attacks, there is a tertiary attack system in the form of plague weapons, temporary weapons and attacks you can either steal from enemies or eventually unlock. This provides a level of customization - albeit limited - that otherwise doesn't exist with your static primary and secondary weapons. These attacks are either single-use or use a form of mana though, so you can't exactly rely on them.

The combat in the game (as previously mentioned) is fast and fluid. Your character moves quick and strikes swiftly. Personally, I really enjoyed this form of playstyle, however it definitely isn't for everyone. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE AGILE BUILDS, THIS GAME IS NOT FOR YOU. There is very little build customization available, so don't expect to go around tanking attacks and doing massive damage.

The setting - Thymesia takes place in a kingdom renowned for its alchemical prowess that has suffered a terrible incident and has fallen into ruin. You are tasked to explore pieces of this kingdom to piece together your memories and bring a stop to the ongoing apocalypse. I enjoyed this premise, and the level designs were pretty atmospheric. However, the plot had a looot of unused potential (see story section).

The music - Not much to say here. The ambient music is dark, gloomy, and atmospheric while the boss music is very energetic and unique. I don't think there's a track here I didn't like.

The art - The graphics are beautiful, but not graphically demanding. The game ran very well, and I had zero complaints about the art direction.

Negatives:
The story - Although the game has a very neat premise with great potential, it unfortunately doesn't do much with it. Many plot hooks either go nowhere or end abruptly/anticlimactically. We never actually find out what the incident that caused the apocalypse is or the origin of our character, which some might prefer but in a game revolving around finding your lost memories, I feel is pretty lame. There are lore tidbits you can find around the game, which I enjoyed reading, but only slightly hint towards things that never really get elaborated upon.

The game's endings were all pretty neat, but again would've been better if the lore was better explored. I do like that the game allowed you to get each ending without having to start the game over though (just beat the final boss again).

Lack of customization - I wasn't really sure whether to put this as a negative or a neutral, but for the sake of warning potential buyers, I decided to put it here.

The game has very little customization or variety in the builds you can make. There are only 3 stats you can upgrade (damage, health, mana), and you're unable to change your primary weapon. The only real forms of customization you get are from the plague weapons and the talent points. These are very limited however, and you are pretty much locked into a quick, agile build.

Some players might not mind the lack of customization (I didn't), however this could easily be a deal breaker for some.

Neutrals:
The length - The game is rather short, having only 3 worlds/settings with 1 long level and ~4 short levels in each. I beat the game in around a week, having 18 hours at the time of writing this review. This isn't really a good or a bad thing, just something to keep in mind before you buy the game.

The difficulty - The game is tough, but you can get the hang of it decently quickly. I'm not a Soulsborne veteran, so those that are probably won't have too much of a challenge. Still, this game would probably be a good purchase for someone looking to get into Souls-like games or a Souls veteran looking for a more chill experience.


Overall, Thymesia is a fun game that suffers from an underutilized premise and a lack of customization. Despite its flaws, its combat is still fun an engaging, without being extremely difficult. At the time of writing this review, the game is on sale for $12.49, which I think is a perfectly fair price-point, all things considered.

Nice short little fighting rpg with an intriguing atmosphere.
The rpg aspect in these action games always feels like a burden,
so I really enjoyed the ability to respec for free and try different play style.

Boss fight and enemy encounter are pretty entertaining, decently balanced and mostly fair, but sometimes feel clunky and unpolished.
