Is this game meant to be played only from the attacking side?
no you can play as with either faction and do as you please after the battle of the bulge campaign came out there was a new game mode called push the frontline where either defenders or attackers can choose to take ground or fall back defensively
i think each mission has a ton of replayability as both sides each mission also has a ton of defensive points and barricade you can play as attackers and win the war or play defensively and try your best to destroy the overwhelming force and their reinforcements
i think the missions that the allies won in real life are the really tough ones to defend because they pour in lots of enemies and vehicles and you cant do everything at once
the final mission of the original campaign Monte Cassino is a good fight to defend some japanese missions are hopeless to defend but putting up a fight is fun also the beach operations are really intense fights and i reccomend battle of the bulge campaign winter campaign its a brutal fight for both sides

The first mission with the Polish in the Anzio Campaign is "Push the Frontline". "Through the Marshes" in the Overlord DLC as well. It's been around.

i didnt know that i thought battle of the bulge was the first one but goes to show that alot of missions are capable of high replayability

Honestly, the Overlord one I didn't realize until I went to play it a second time. The first time I played it, I spawned as a Churchill and went on endless rampage.
A mission I recently made specifically to be played as the Defenders. It's late war Ost Front. https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3402513242

Defensive gameplay isn't very exciting. It's cool that it's in the game, but after doing a couple of them I was so bored. Even on realistic, you end up just defending the same spot for like 20 minutes straight unless you're losing the scenery never changes and it just feels like a really really long shooting gallery.

I remedy this in my mission by making absolutely sure you loose objectives. You can win it for certain on the last or second to last phase... But you will lose objectives. 25mins of gameplay/tacti-cool retreat, multiple phases/objectives and different lines of defense.

I gotta agree here for the most part. But also agree with Netscape that it's fixed by making sure you lose till the last point. The old Stalingrad map had a lot of great German defensive missions, such as the Airfield one which was hard AF at times and you really had to do well on every point. I wish Marco would just upload the old versions of official maps to the workshop.

Yeah. Defensive missions also tend to have an issue of being easily "solveable"
Alot of times you can find where enemys shall spawn, get in a good position and mow down huge amounts of their guys before retaliation can occur. Thats just an issue with games in general though tbf.
