Idle protection?
So when I leave the game for an hour or so, it just shows a blank screen and I have to hard quit the application.
Is this by design to protect us from idling?

It's probably a bug. I don't think many game developers consider this use case when building/testing their games. It is a bit odd to just leave a game running by itself for an hour. That'll put more wear on your machine and consume electricity for really no purpose.

It is pretty much a use case in this game and not odd to tank shapes while afk.
