Pretty good and closer to the TTX

Blood Angel good, Tyranid bad.

I suppose I could have put in a short rant about how few factions are playable in the game, but then again, would you really want it getting back to the God Emperor that you are incapable of vanquishing tyranid scum with the legendary Blood Angels?

When ever I don't have the time to, or wanting to drag out my 40k armies, this scracthes the itch. Doesn't play exactly like the table top experience, but really plays faster, and with loads of armies and battle mission, and areas to play. This is as close to having a table top solo mode, minus the expense, painting, and setup.

Turn based, I thought, was a lost art. This delivers the fix for us older gamers.

Perhaps the driest WH40k game ever release, Battlesector is one of the better Warhammer (40K) games on the market, but is a great example of wasted potential.

The campaign, while lengthy and varied in both mission structure and unit types, offers nothing more than static painting and slowly delivered lines of lore and generic military talk--and not even during the mission, only before and after! The lore, for all the major loreheads, is only somewhat interesting with it being the first game to introduce the enhanced and now-standardized Primaris marines, but nothing really comes of it.

At least, I don't think it does. Once again the presentation was so lackluster and borderline unfinished, and the story so rote, so that I started skipping expository scenes just to get to the next battle.

But damn if that gameplay doesn't hit. Missions that once felt imbalanced or impossible challenges suddenly become adrenaline-pumping, skin-of-your-teeth victories that beg for a do-over to try and get a cleaner victory. Each mission begets an exciting turn-based fog of war battlefield that often rewards tactility and smart positioning, yet often throws a wrench in your plans in unexpected ways.

I heavily enjoyed unlocking new units, new weapons, new abilities, and tinkering with my new toys to see what I like, what fits fits my playstyle, and what needs to go back in the box. Each unit is lovingly modeled and really taps into to that desire to simply admire Warhammer minis; this one is truly for the fans.

But still, the game lacks in some key ways that--with it now being helmed by a new developer Slitherine Ltd.--may improve in the coming months or years.

Currently, other than a campaign, you have a few additional ways to play: Daemonic Incursion, which acts as a horde mode; Planetary Supremacy, which is like a 3-way free for all; custom campaigns made by players I've yet to try; and Skirmish, a one-off battle. In each of these, you can choose your faction, which at the time of writing, has some of the all-time greats: Orks, Sister of Battle, Tau, etc.

But the issue is, unless you want to forever play Blood Angels, you have absolutely zero way of knowing how a new ($15) army plays. This game is niche, so guides are very few and far between, and your $15 only gets you access to the army.

No tutorials. No campaign. Nothing. Just the armies and a dream.

Hopefully that changes soon. A full campaign would be fantastic, but even a mini tutorial "story mode" for each faction to get to grips with the strengths and weaknesses would be great.

As it stands, I still highly recommend this game to turn-based tactics and Warhammer 40k fans, ideally both. On sale you can get a ton of content and factions which hopefully amount to more in the future, and if you have a friend, can even be a way to simulate the tabletop in the cheapest way possible.

This game was one I eyed up for a while and the time I've spent with it has been engaging. Scratches those war gaming itches of creating your army to your preference and crushing space bugs.

Table top simulator. Challenging and creative. Only short fall is not enough campaign DLCs are only for skirmish. I think the story mode is where the gold is.

Love Warhammer 40k, every game is great for me!

A lot of good things about this game. Model detail is excellent. Weapon visual effects are excellent. Easy to start playing right away. Just jump in and start having fun from the first turn!
