WizardChess is a a fun and chaotic little strategy game, and I had a great time with it! It takes the fun gameplay of grid-based RPGs like Fire Emblem or Disgaea, but trims them down into sweet 30 minute bursts. There are tons of unique units to experiment with, hundreds of team combos and tons of fun gambling mechanics to keep runs feeling fresh, and the games simple artstyle keeps things simple and readable without sacrificing the charm. The music really surprised me, its this fun energetic jazzy score that never fails to make me feel like I pulled off a big heist, even when its just another pretty average double kill.

If I had to nitpick, it really only comes down to polish. Balance is completely nonexistent between units, which isn't inherently a bad thing. The game's chaos is certainly a selling point, but when units like the Hunter or Monk can solo any game mode on any difficulty if you get them early enough, it hurts my drive to try new things when there is an optimal strategy. Its makes it a lot of fun when you're unlocking things really quickly, but it sort of kills a lot of my desire to go wrap up the last couple of unlocks. That's not to say I didn't have fun with it, however! If you're looking for 20-30 hours of solid roguelike joy, WizardChess is a wonderful time! If it looks interesting to you, I'm sure that you'll get some fun out of it. 6.5/10.
