Throw does no damage, but then you can follow up with a long combo + teleport for big damage.
If by "smash in no clash" you mean with a tackle, you can throw from tackle too to keep the advantage.
You can use Skelly, as their super power was designed to help you win mash battles.
And you can look up mashing techniques, if you find the right one for you it won't take much to improve.
Beyond that, I've been in your situation before I learned how to mash properly. In that case, the game made me feel like the underdog protagonist in any anime: you have to use your environment and outsmart your opponent while holding on for dear life, since you're at a power disadvantage. I actually liked that as not many games can give you that feeling, but I understand your mileage may vary. =)
Even if my comment can look mean, your game is awesome and i gonna buy Day1.
The real problem for me, i'm 35 years old, playing against my brother who are 25 years and i can't compete against his mashing skill and long session (yeah we love the game) its really painfull physically (xD), when most of versus fighting we play are more "combo learning" like piano.
But anyway, the graphism are beautiful, the sound is GREAT and its just a problem of mechanic (for me) where the readings are not enough rewarding against the mashing skill.
Yeah, I tried thinking about alternative options to make the game more accessible, or less tiring when someone doesn't want to do that or plays continuously for a long time, but I haven't come up with a good one yet.
