This will be a fairly honest and direct review.

The game is very good in concept and very poor in execution. I have a pretty heavy machine and I get constant FPS drops for no apparent reason while my machine is not even at 25% load on processor, RAM, and graphics card. And when I say FPS drops, I mean like 5 FPS and my inputs don't work at all. Like, I can move with WASD, but no matter how often I push fire, I don't fire. If I pull out my grenade, I keep it in my hand and don't throw it. It's like any kind of fire button is disabled during frame stuttering. Like, Valve should probably pull this off Steam until the devs actually make the game playable. At this point, it is probably stealing and could feasibly be argued in court.

I picked up this game in early access and it was really solid. It was an easy "shut your brain off" PvE game and those roots are still secure in foundation. You get standard classes with a role that nobody actually uses the class for at all (medics not reviving, assaulters staying on defense, engineers not doing any engineering at all). Somehow you can still usually win on normal this way, but you can still lose as well.

The weapons need heavy revisions because they don't do their intended job well, but it's still a bit charming with how unbalanced it is (and not in your favor). The classes all have their own unique skills, perks, and equipment. The Demolisher, for instance, can become a suicide bomber with a fully automatic shotgun and a melee attack that shatters dead bugs, and an arm one of those football people would envy. The engineer can build stuff like turrets outside of base. The assaulter can get a little boost towards the opponent and lay new spawn points for the team. That kind of stuff.

Every time they release an update, the game gets worse. Not in concept, but technically. More bugs are introduced, others aren't fixed, the optimization gets worse (somehow). Nobody seems to have an answer as to why and the development team seemingly has chosen to just not acknowledge the problem, let alone fix it. Been a while since I could even complete a single mission.

Speaking of this. The game crashes all the time. I realize this is a problem with UE5 in general, but I can't make it through missions anymore it seems. Crash to desktop and once it caused an entire BSOD on crash. And in the rare case your game doesn't crash, the server you're playing on does.

There are other flaws with game play, but most of those are what I would consider part of the game's charm. Like occasionally just running hundreds more at you than it should even though your map has no mutations or anything. Or accidentally spawning in like 10 tigers at once for you to mow down. Or overwhelming you so much you can't leave the starting area.

But the technical "achievements" of this game seem more like proof of concept than even a beta, let alone official release. If you buy this I would consider setting an alarm at one and a half hours before considering to refund it. I really hope they fix it because it has immense potential and console players don't seem to have nearly as many issues. But right now, for PC, I would genuinely consider skipping this one until optimization issues have been fixed. But I could easily see them abandoning PC all together and only focusing on console with how much console players seem to like it.
