Also, speaking of quality affinity. You need high stat investment to make quality worth it. If you spread everything thin, and have as much str and dex, as in int, faith, vigor, endurance, etc you're not getting anything good out of quality affinity. It doesn't make it scale from all stats. Only relevant ones.
Quality builds are fine, but I wouldn't spec your weapons for quality until RL 200+...
Pick dex or strength over the other once you've found a weapon that fits your playstyle, then upgrade that weapon.
But, yes, your choices are limited... buuuut, a lot of cool peeps here would be willing to give you a fully upgraded weapon if you ask nicely.
I mean, I kind of knew that, I guess I just slightly underestimated how bad it would be. You would think investing in, say, three different stats for a weapon would end up beating out a different weapon that only requires one stat, but nope, doesn't work that way.
- Reduvia has fairly low requirements but is kinda obscure as a playthrough tool because only bleed build players level Arcane and they tend to be PvP focused
- Dragon breath incantations have pretty low requirements and can be boosted with an early game talisman + Highlander Axe, ailments are gonna be the best way to deal with lower raw damage so Frostbreath and Rot breath should be your first two unlocks
- For your final melee weapons pick Celebrant's Skull, it's a surprisingly good greathammer for its low requirements and the extra rune boost helps with all the levels you need to get
- for your offhand I suggest Meteor Rod (no upgrade cost), the dragon communion seal and whatever shield you fancy (Coiled Shield for another ailment tool perhaps?). Spell wise Rock Hurl is a good allrounder, Glintstone Icecrag another ailment tool, Flame Grant Me Strength plus putting Prelate's Charge on the skull grants a surprisingly powerful combo... or Flaming Strike for good general utility.
Some observations:
First, it's not quite as bad as I thought it would be, but the math is kind of wonky. Technically, Vigor, Mind, and Endurance can be useful to any character, plus one stat for damage, so you're able to make use of at least four of the eight stats. This means your effective level is roughly half your actual level.
Second, despite that, not all stats are created equal, and there is definitely a priority in which they should be taken. I am definitely feeling the lack of Vigor. Mind and Endurance, while technically useful, are often more in the "optional" category as they more facilitate rather than directly contributing. As long as you can mid roll, you don't really need more END, and you don't need MND if you're not using much FP.
I ended up doing some level grinding (poor Greyoll) and hit level 70 before running through Castle Morne. I'm in Stormveil now, around level 95. In between, I farmed smithing stones in the Gael Tunnel to upgrade a Dismounter and Stone Club to +12.
I then went and grabbed the Godslayer's Greatsword from the Caelid Divine Tower (part of the reason behind my level grinding, so I could meet the minimum stats). The Godskin Apostle was a tough fight, but I managed to beat him by exploiting several of his weaknesses. The fight basically went as follows:
- Open up with a Poison Mist, courtesy of the Dragon Communion Seal for extra buildup from ARC scaling.
- Use the Reduvia's skill to bleed the Apostle twice while keeping my distance.
- Use the Sword of St. Trina to put the Apostle to sleep.
- Wait for poison to run out and reapply it while the Apostle is still sleeping.
- Pop Flask of Physick and summon my Spirit Ash (jellyfish in this case, though I don't know it made much difference).
- Switch to my Dismounter +12 with a Blood infusion and spam R1.
- Apostle wakes up, begins phase 2 transition, bleeds, then gets stunned out of transition.
- Crit the Apostle, then switch back to Reduvia.
- Ranged bleeds and poison eventually win the day.
Reduvia and Sword of St. Trina were unupgraded, by the way. It was an especially tough fight because the Apostle had at least one attack that would one-shot me at 21 Vigor, and gets a lot more aggressive in phase 2. I think if I were to do this again, I'd invest in Reduvia as an early game weapon like Yal suggested.
Now that I have the Godslayer's Greatsword at +6, it's tearing through the enemies in Stormveil. I often have trouble with the Banished Knights due to just how tanky they are and how easily they can poise through attacks, but now they're going down easy.
