No matter how much I've tried, watched videos etc I cannot get the strange ball key right. I'm losing the will to live...and finish this game

I am trying to pick up I think it is the tumeric or paprika vial that is in the drawer of the desk closest to the stairs in the kitchen. I tried to pick it up and it didnt let me so I thought the extra vial was somewhere else. after searching and to no avail, I finally caved and looked at a walkthough. That IS the right object. I tried crouching pulling the drawer out further. Tried restarting the game. Thinking next step is to try and reinstall???...
