Linux confirmed working 2025, i7 rtx 4090 also without steam
Just thought I'd comment in case anyone else wondered how to get a similar setup working. I've got wine installed on endeavour os. Endeavour os seems to be the go to if you want to game on linux. I've got a ton of other games to work well on this OS too. Their forums are good if you need help troubleshooting, they help with gaming stuff. But basically after I installed wine and the open source nividia drivers recommended by Endeavour OS blog everything pretty much just worked. Old retro and newest games using unreal or unity engines.

For G String install using the regular linux steam installer from steams site. You will use compatibility mode 'proton' to trick steam into letting you download the windows game on linux, but you won't use this to run it. I did try proton 8 and 9 to run the game, but I only get the intro video and a black screen after that. Once the game is fully downloaded you will first have to do the sound bug fix. go to you home user directory, show hidden files then .steam/steam/steamapps/common/G String/gstringv2/ . Then open gameinfo.txt remove this entire line including the space so that no space is left behind "Game |gameinfo_path|.|

then save the file. Now you're ready to run the game using wine. go up one directory to .steam/steam/steamapps/common/G String/

Open terminal here. run this command using your native resolution:

wine gstring.exe -game gstringv2 -w 1920 -h 1080

It will skip the intro videos. You might get a black screen. Press escape to toggle the menu. Then launch new game. For me all is working after that. The only bugs I've noticed are a VRAM out of memory bug, which just requires a restart. Looks like this completely skips steam and I can probably now take my install folder with me and just run it completely offline which was my original intention. Hope this helps someone. I'll post in bug thread about the vram.
