So, are the monsters in my barn sentient, or?
I've just started the game, so I'm not very far in, but I'd like to ask - are the monsters I take care of in my barn sentient or not? I'd feel very awkward if my character was doing the business with what's basically a domesticated animal. Do they ever talk, or is it just the heart that shows up when you pet them and stuff?

Monsters are 100% sapient. The various monster tribes from deeper within the Central Kingdom work with the Frontiersman's Union in bringing in fresh blood to their tribes, as well as helping them regulate the monstrous traits that allow them to absorb ley energies (magic) from the air. Monsters with Yellow Eyes are 'Feral' and effectively nonsapient, the magic literally burning out most of their cognitive processes, and is a common happening for monsters whose bloodlines are too thick (represented by the tameness bar in the breeding UI), but there are exceptions.

The Monster Tribes provide the Union with recordings of their member's memories, which are projected onto the unborn monster's mind while in the egg inside of the incubator, which also accelerates the growth process. Monsters hatched inside of a Union Incubator are born with fully adult bodies and minds, with a mixture of memories taken from the tribe of their species, enough to give them a grounding and personality separate that will grow from that point.

We are looking to include monster dialogue in the near future to allow this to be more readily apparent.

I believe they are. They can leave you farm and report you for bad care if you neglect them, and after one year they can become full citizens. To me that strongly implies sentience and free will.

Yes, I think they are. At least because of their faces and facial expressions during hot scenes as I noticed
