Attack self for Defence increase?

Hey I hear this FF game is the famous/infamous levelling system, the one I'm not sure about is the title implies, attack yourself and teammates for a defence increase. Is that still in this game or no?

Any difficulty spikes?

In the Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster there was a steep, though honestly fun difficulty spike with the final boss, Chaos. Does anyone know if there's any harsh difficulty spikes in this one? Especially cause I'm playing somewhat.. unoptimally (Firion is a Red Mage type build, Maria is duel daggers black mage in the front line, and Guy is my archer lol) so i don't want to end up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ myself over because of my silly builds....
