Short Cut to FF2
My friend said once I beat Gariland the game is over, and the rest is just extra fluff because Gariland in his head believes that he can go back in time but not if you save & quit after you deal the final blow, which saves you 2000 years of game time.

unfortunately, that doesn't take care of the fiends. Assuming you kill Garland in the present and prevent his time travel escapades (preventing himself from going to the past, and the fiends from going forward in time), the fiends still exist in the past, and will eventually need to be taken care of as I am presuming age doesn't affect them (Tiamat being in the wind temple for 400 years and seems fine)
