Laptop Performance FIX - Force Nvidia GPU Over Intel Integrated Graphics
Windows 10 Force Nvidia GPU Over Integrated Graphics
1) Open Windows Settings
2) Click on “System”
3) Click on “Display”
4) Scroll down and click on “Graphics Settings”
5) Under Graphics Performance Preference
a) Choose “Desktop App” for preference
b) Browse for the .exe game file (Do not use shortcut from desktop) For reference,
the game file should be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\
(game name)
c) Click on options on the Program. Set preference to “High Performance”. Should
have Nvidia Graphics Card listed
underneath.
6) Save and close the settings.
7) Open the Nvidia Control Panel
a) Click on “Manage 3D Settings”
b) Go to global settings and set the preferred graphics processor to “High-
Performance Nvidia processor.” (I recommend keeping the default settings for the
global settings until the game has been tested.)
8) Apply the setting and close.
9) Make sure your Laptop is in High Performance mode in the Power settings.
10) Go to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\(game name) game file
.exe. Right click to bring up the properties and click on the “Compatibility” tab. Check
“Run this program as an administrator.” Hit “Apply” and “OK.”
11) Restart the Laptop, check that all settings are set and start the game. A pop-up
should show for the game .exe. Hit “yes.” To make sure that the Nvidia GPU is
working, bring up the task manager and click on performance. Under GPU, with the
Nvidia label, there should be utilization.
If these settings don’t work for you, you can attach an external monitor to your laptop. It will work because external display ports are usually set to using the Nvidia graphics. The laptop display is always set to the integrated Intel graphics as shown in the Nvidia Control Panel "Configure Sound, PhysX". Sometimes when doing this method, you will get better performance in game.
