Probably looking at any video will tell you if you're interested in this game to begin with. The gameplay itself is not particularly challenging.

But that's largely the beauty here. The world of games is bigger than ever, and titles like Unpacking are really cool to see I think.

There is a story, and there are some hidden things to discover. You unpack your way through a series of homes, from 1997 to 2018. I think some elements of Unpacking will land with the most impact if your lifetime aligns with the timeline here. That is just because you are more likely to recognize items at a glance. That is a nice feeling, but it is not at all necessary to get the major themes, changes, and most importantly: vibes.

Having been through a number of challenging moves in the not too distant past, this was more cathartic than I expected. But it was lovely from start to finish.

The game here is not about besting a score, completing a loot pass, or mastering any particular skill. The game is about looking at yourself and considering where you have been and where you are going. The name itself is doing unsubtle double work here. That can be a tough ask from a hobby built around dopamine loops and escapism. But 'just clicking things' was supremely satisfying and did give me a moment to escape myself right now, and think about myself in a bigger picture. A beautiful idea executed in a beautiful way.

Adorable story and engaging game play. It was really beautiful to see a person change and grow based on their belongings. I was so sad when I saw the credits roll; I need at least 3 more levels: moving into a bigger house, an older relative moving in, and then moving into a senior living community or something.
