The problem with FE is that it never changed its monetization system to modern times, its pricing is not competitive when looking at other MMOs. It charges too much and gives so little in return. And playing as a freemium player is very punishing progress/reward-wise.
Yea I know it's F2P. I'm talking about how unenjoyable it has been for F2P players. To turn f2P players into potential paying customers AND keep the game populated, you need to make the game worth their while. And in this the game has failed.
Since it went f2p under GamersFirst there was a tier system of how you get to experience the game. They never got rid of the original monthly subscription service. F2P players got only 1 crafting slot, Freemium players (F2P who made a single purchase once) got only 3 slots. Monthly subbed players, depending on their tier got a whole lot more.
Also when finishing quests, Free(mium) players got reduced amount of chips and exp than listed in the quest log. (-25% iirc). Harvesting nodes also happens at a reduced speed. You were effectively punished for not being a subscribed player.
In general new players always left by the time they reached Kaibab Forest, never to return. Zones beyond that were always barren. Progression and rewards felt so painfully poor when the game expects you to invest so much time in it.
Then LIttle Orbit rebooted the whole thing and wiped everybody's account. The game was already on life support bleeding players at that point with <100 players per day. (you can easily count for yourself using the Social menu and set region range to ALL).
This decision pretty much made almost all loyal players leave for good. Now it seems mostly only new blood is still playing this game. There is no more real money item shop from what I heard but the damage is done. And the laggy server is still terrible requiring multiple planned (and unplanned) startups.
In overall, FE has always been stuck using an archaic MMO gaming model from almost 20 years ago. It never adapted. Its post-apocalyptic setting has always been its only saving grace but that is simply not enough to make it worth for most people. I mean, an MMO with <100 people is not good. I felt like I was playing a single player game in a world meant for hundreds.
If I wanted to play a single player post apocalyptic game, we already have Fallout. I played this game back then cause there wasn't an MMO version of that. Here we are today a decade later with much better alternatives and even FO76 is now longer horrible.
FE simply never had the resources or will to compete against newer MMO games as the MMO market changed.
* was having probs with game being so dark for me, found out i was using it in windowed mode since i wanted easy access to desktop also. Finally went into the fullscreen w/vsync and what a diff. Everything brightened up, colors banged in, really made a diff on my part.
* and if you have a widescreen you have probs with stretching unless you use the monitors native screen size, and dont forget about the higher rez font sizes that are too small to play the game with. Just cant win.
i once read that originally it was just a test of a new graphics engine technology, like the large map and open world, and whatever. so it was never a serious game. it quickly just became a cash cow for squeezing dollars out of rubes.
back in the day i took my main through all of the old/original starter zones that are no longer used and rather enjoyed it
could have been a fun game, could be a cool reboot, v.2 (but not this version, it's a museum piece now)
It was always intended to be what it was, you're just spreading rumors. Not sure how it was a cash cow, game was $40 with no sub back when it was released. Niche, couldn't have sold a lot of units since it eventually died. You might be referring to some time years after Icarus Studios closed where there the game went "Free to play" and managed by another company.
The classic reboot is run by different people than prior to 2021. According to the latest information, the current studio is porting the game to Unity to get away from it's old Linux code base. I don't expect to see changes to the game until they finish this port.
or perhaps just inadequate
so they took money and did f all, yw
