A farm with max farmers should feed your initial population easily, assuming the water for the farm is nearby and you produce enough water.
This is not a difficult game on normal difficulty.
I wouldn't think you'd need something to tell you how much food you'd need? How many people do you have? You need at a minimum, that much. I try to make sure I have enough for at least 10 days out, because sht happens and it's good to have a backlog while you figure it out.
If the tutorial is useless, then just don't use it. You're free to figure it all out on your own, if you wish.
The only thing I can think you're doing wrong could be you're making multiple different types of food. Say you have 10 of every piece of food, that would feed 10 people but make them very happy, where as having 10 of one type of food would also feed 10 people but not make them very happy. More food types increases happiness but doesn't increase the amount of people you can feed.
I've not played in quite a while so idk if they fixed berry bushes but they are OP, even late game I made a huge patch of them and just get all my free guys to harvest and sell to the traders when they come. You can pretty much buy your way through the rest of the game.
The game doesn't tell you that your farm needs compost. It tells you that you can upgrade if you would like to use compost. You never have to.
