OK, but what do you do before that room is available?

It has been a while since I played this, but you should have access to Ryza's bedroom right from the start of the game.

--Edit--
Yup, as soon as you get control of Ryza, you can turn around and immediately go back into her room. So the diary is always available.

I was making a bit of an assumption myself here, but the progress of Atelier Ryza is a little different from other games in the series. With other games in the series, you either start off in the atelier, or you have access to it very quickly.
Ryza is different in that "Atelier Ryza" itself doesn't exist until a good portion into the game. So until that happens, something else has to take its place.
The fact that you need to use the diary to QUIT is just wild. It might be the worst design decision I've ever heard.
Eh, so you can't properly exit quickly when your mom yells to come to eat or when your carpet starts to burn ... in a single player game? :maple2:
Scratch that. I just started yesterday night and and found out about the fast travel thingie now.
So I guess it's not as horrible as I first thought.
You might still lose some time to get back to where you were if you need to save inbetween, but then it's bearable.
